An introduction to Cricket / Umpiring Education Course was run by the Vanuatu Cricket Association (VCA) Development Team on 9 March. Sport teachers from 8 primary schools attended the course.
The objectives of the course were:
  • Teach the teachers the basics skills of cricket (refer to coaching components)
  • To educate teachers in basic cricket coaching and provide them with the skills to take cricket classes in their respective schools
  • To develop a presence in the form of teachers and volunteers to act as a contact in schools and continue the development of cricket in rural areas
  • Train teachers to prepare school teams for SEPSSA Games (South Efate Primary Schools Sports Association)
The teachers who undertook the introductory course received the necessary skills to teach a new fun and exciting activities in their schools that will promote physical education and healthy lifestyle. Couple of teachers has been to these courses more than twice but they were keen to learn new skills that were taught. It shows that they undertook the course as an initiative to learn new things as well as building their confidence as a coach to take cricket classes in their respective schools. For some this course was a refresher.
The course participants also observed how we run cricket coaching sessions in the schools. We had a school clinic in one of the schools during the course and they had a chance to see how we ran a coaching session with different age groups. This is a new idea we came up with and we thought it will give a clear picture to the participants on how to run a session with their kids and we encouraged them to come up with new ideas that will suit their needs when they're coaching. The very important aspect we mentioned to them was fun and participation.
On presenting the certificates to the course participants, we encourage them to help in promoting and develop cricket by introducing and training young kids in the schools. The course participants were also encouraged to be innovative to use other resources they have such as plastic bottles and slippers as markers, timbers as stumps, coconut leave palm as bats and any more resources they can think of.
