Australian skipper Steve Waugh was understandably delighted with his team's effort in winning the first Super Challenge 2000 series match against South Africa on Wednesday and lauded praise on the efforts of Michael Bevan in their large partnership.
"Bevo is great to bat with as he turns the strike over very well and makes a lot of ones turn into twos"
Waugh was also pleased with the fielding effort of his charges, suggesting it was the best part of the Australians' game, "Our hustle and intensity were great - in particular our backing up ... which I thought was the highlight".
Waugh also felt that the South Africans looked a little flat, but wasn't all that surprised given they have just experienced a tough tour of the sub-continent.
South African skipper Shaun Pollock was disappointed with his side's effort, particularly after its great start.
"We started really well with three early wickets which put them on the back foot early, but then Steve and Michael batted superbly and as the partnership progressed they were really difficult to bowl at."
Pollock praised the conditions and the atmosphere but felt the outfield was a little slippery. He also pointed out that they had to chase more than should have been the case.
Nicky Boje didn't play because of an injured finger sustained at training yesterday but subsequent x-rays revealed that no further damage had occurred. Pollock intimated that his young spinner would be available for Friday's match.
Pollock also suggested there are a few areas to work on and they will be discussed at a team meeting before training.
The Australians have an optional session and, if the weather is fine, they will probably opt for the golf course.
