WEST INDIES v NEW ZEALAND

At Nottingham, June 16

15-Apr-1980
At Nottingham, June 16. West Indies won by 32 runs. The World Cup holders did not have matters all their own way after Burgess, winning the toss for the third time, again preferred to field. However, the batting of their stars, Greenidge and the captain, Clive Lloyd, turned the scales. Greenidge stayed through the first 33 overs and Lloyd the remaining 27, with the result that New Zealand were never really free. In his first spell, Hadlee proved erratic, but later, to the delight of his local Trent Bridge admirers, became quite hostile. Burgess varied his attack in short spells and in this way did not permit the opposition to settle down.
Sadly for New Zealand, Geoffrey Howarth was still nursing his hamstring injury, and his absence was a severe loss. Although only three batsmen failed to reach double figures, the West Indies battery of five seam bowlers was never properly mastered. There were some splendid drives by Coney, and Burgess and Hadlee played their parts, but New Zealand never looked like making the 245 runs they required for victory. Lloyd was Man of the Match.
