New WA coach Mike Veletta will take charge of the Western Warriors in the inaugural Champions Cup at the WACA Ground from Thursday 29 March to Wednesday 4 April 2001.
Australian batsman Justin Langer returns to Perth from India to captain the Western Warriors in the round robin tournament against Mumbai, Central Districts and Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Left hand batsman Simon Katich is Langer's vice-captain for the tournament. The Western Warriors will contest the Champions Cup as 1999-2000 winners of Australia's Mercantile Mutual Cup. Mumbai won India's Ranji Tournament that season, while Central Districts and Kwa-Zulu Natal are current one-day champions after winning the Shell Cup and the Standard Bank Cup, respectively.
Midland-Guildford all-rounder Peter Worthington will debut for Western Australia.
The 21-year-old scored 570 runs at 51.82 and took 41 wickets at 19.80 in SunSmart League matches this season. He also played one ACB Cup match, taking four wickets at 26.75.
