India clinched the series after producing another middle-order double-century partnership. And again, England could not capitalise on a strong position. Kohli failed for once, dismissed for eight in a superb opening spell by Woakes which left India 25 for three. But, after three successive maidens, he was taken out of the attack - and the pressure released. Yuvraj Singh and Dhoni, both 35, and with 580 one-day internationals between them, hit the short-pitched strategy of England's wayward pace attack - including Plunkett, in for Adil Rashid - to all parts of the heavily fenced Barabati Stadium.

They ended up adding 256, the second-highest stand for the fourth wicket in one-day internationals, behind compatriots Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja, against Zimbabwe here in April 1998. Yuvraj made his first 50-over century since the 2011 World Cup, and in the meantime had survived cancer. Now he broke his own record for the highest score for India against England (previously 138 not out at Rajkot in 2008-09), facing 127 balls in all; Dhoni faced 122, and hit six sixes.
Roy made a bright 82 off 73, though England were never truly in the hunt until Morgan, making his first ODI hundred since June 2015, and Plunkett hit 50 off 25 balls for the eighth wicket. But Morgan's run-out after backing up too far extinguished all hope. Earlier, Root had made his seventh fifty in nine one-day internationals, without converting any into centuries. Hales was later ruled out for the rest of the trip after breaking his right hand attempting a catch.
