Ashraful axed for second Test

Mohammad Ashraful has been dropped from the Bangladesh squad for the second Test against Pakistan, which begins on December 17. The decision follows Ashraful's poor showing in the Chittagong Test, where he lasted fourteen balls in two innings.

Shafiul Islam, meanwhile, returns to the national setup, after being ignored for the first Test. He had missed out on the West Indies Tests in October-November, because of a foot injury.

There was confusion surrounding Bangladesh's squad for the second Test, with regards to the status of Ashraful. He had checked into the team hotel in Dhaka on Wednesday and was among the fourteen players who practiced at the Shere Bangla Stadium on Thursday morning. Also, coach Stuart Law had said Ashraful was, to his knowledge, part of the squad.

However, the selection panel's list, which was yet to be approved by BCB president AHM Mustafa Kamal as is mandatory, did not include Ashraful's name. Eventually, Kamal approved the squad on returning to Dhaka after the ACC meeting in Singapore late on Thursday evening, but the delay raised questions of professionalism.

The amount of time the coaching staff spent working on Ashraful during the training session, and Law's statements, served to add to the confusion. "As far as I know, he [Ashraful] is in the squad," Law said. "That's why he's here at practice. We haven't been told anything different. Maybe it is speculation, that sort of thing goes on in this part of the world."

Later on Thursday, the BCB's cricket operations committee asked Ashraful to leave the hotel while he was signing up with a new club for the Dhaka Premier League on the last day of the inter-club transfers. Shafiul Islam arrived at the hotel in the evening from Bogra, his hometown. The coaching staff wasn't informed of the switch and got to know of it only after it was reported on television channels and news websites.

@Fahii: Full strength, do you mean a side missing, Aamir, Asif, Yousuf, Junaid and Wahab Riaz is a full strenghth side. Mann! this is the least favour Pak can do to BD.

I agree with Sachit1979 , Abu Jayed and Al Amin are doing very good at the moment. After team selection in previous game I wrote in cricinfo why Shahadath is again when in last 8 innings he achieved 4 wickets only. After playing 291 international innings Ashraful has proved his ability as a worst player when his avg is below 25.Tushar Imran,Asif,Dhiman Ghosh have been showing very good performance. It is better to give chance them as a good performer in national cricket league like Nazimuddin.

It is such disheartening to see a team with so much potential gone completely waste(may be I am exaggerating) but it does feel pitiful to see BD team going down without giving any fight quite very often. Apart from few players lot of them do not show real commitment on the field. Feel pity for Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan along with the bowlers who have to toil many a times more than a rest of the team. Would really like to see some frequent tightly fought games from BD team....

Bangladesh is not playing to their potential, they are much better team then what the results are, bangladesh needs to get together and fight like a tiger, they are not united, they are not playing to win, looks like they are divided, bring back Sakib ull Hasan as a Captain i think the team will perform much better, sakib is a worlds top class player with lots of experience he is the best in my eyes who can manage this team better then anyone else. thankyou

Ashraful is one of the who is big match player. I think they should have play Ashraful any way. They put him in too much tension to score runs. He should be left alone and tell him to play in free mind. they are is other player don't get runs but they are still in team. Aloc Kapali and Ashraful should have kept in the team.

Reminds me of how Wasim Raja's career was destroyed. He was always called when he was not ready, and dropped just when he was settling down. How can any player perform like this.

@Fahii.. The reason Pakistan is playing full strength team because they respect cricket and the BD team, they want BD to fight hard so they can get some confident playing good teams.. plus they want to give practice to their main players before the England series. I pray for BD team to be one of the best team and play some good cricket... Respect from Pakistani Fan and good luck to both teams.

its not good to blame only ashraful for bangladesh loss. Bangladesh is a team of 11 players.. and captain should lead from the front... i remember after losing first T20 match of this tour, Bangladesh Captain said "We missed Tamim" now tamim has played all three ODI's and 2 innings of 1st test.. so what difference he made ? Bangladesh can compete only when they will play like a unit not like a individual. Bangladesh has spent alot of time in International Cricket World.. and they are disappointing... their bat & ball should talk rather than their mouth !!
