South Africa's Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander, Australia's Michael Clarke and Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara are in the running for the ICC Cricketer of the Year award for 2011-12. The ICC announced the shortlists for the annual awards on Thursday, and the winners will be announced at a function ahead of the World Twenty20, on September 15, in Colombo.

The four cricketers have also been nominated for ICC Test Cricketer of the Year, while Lasith Malinga, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli join Sangakkara as the contenders for ODI Cricketer of the year.

The nominees were picked off the ICC's longlists, via voting by an academy of 32 people consisting of former players, members of the media, and representatives of the ICC's panel of umpires and match referees. West Indies' Stafanie Taylor and England's Sarah Taylor are most prominent on the women's shortlists, nominated for both Women's ODI Cricket of the Year and Women's T20I Cricketer of the Year.

Where is ajmal in this list of cricketer of the year Awards???? Who are these ppl who can't see his outstanding performance thorughout the year... He was the man of the series in the England tour and has given match winning performances for Pak in that period from August 2011-August 2012... How can they overlook Saeed Ajmal... This is not fair at all :(

  • POSTED BY web_guru2003 on | September 1, 2012, 20:53 GMT

Ajmal not included in Test Player of the year and Cricketer of the year is enough to tell about the fairness of these awards. He was the highest wicket taker in Tests by some distance.

Let's pretend that due to some convoluted logic he doesn't deserve to be in the rankings for Tests or ODIs alone, but what the case is against cricketer of the year when he as shone in all three formats? I am sure all three formats (TEST, ODI and T20) has some weightage factor and but a person that has stood out across all three formats should justifiably be the leading contender for the honor

I see most of ppl here have got a serious issue with Sangakkara and his nominations. One thing has to be made very clear here that Sanga scored his 1444 runs in 4 different countries (SL,SA , ENG , UAE ), in 9 different stadiums against 4 top test nations (AU , SA, PAK, ENG). And He made 3 out of his 5 centuries (211,199,192,144,108) outside of SL (which includes a 211). He has also been very consistent thru out the year in all 3 formats. Furthermore He is not only an outstanding Cricketer but also a gentleman on the field. So before making some pointless comments about flat tracks, read my comment........ peace out !!!!!!!!

How can you Justify not nominating SAEED AJMAL for the Player of the Year Award? The players nominated for the award based on their performance between August 4, 2011, and August 6, 2012. In this period the Highest Wicket Takers in International cricket are Saeed Ajmal 120 wickets, Herath 84 wickets, Swann 71, Ashwin 70, Broad 69, Roach 66, Malinga 65, Umar Gul 65, M Morkel 60, Anderson 57, Philander 57 (Philander is nominated for the award).

@Jarr30 Need to correct your statement 'Sanga' scored all his runs in the flat pitches of SL'. While agreeing with your statement that Amla deserves the award for his incredible performance you are dead wrong about Sanga. He scored 500 odd runs vs pak in UAE with Ajmal and Rehmen at their deadly best which i think is more than all the runs the Englishmen scored during their tour to UAE. Secondly the pitches in SL are not flat except for SSC. Sanga scored a brilliant 199* against the pak spinners in a wicket the all other batsmen from both sides struggled. In addition to this he scored a century in SA (which won SL the match). Please get your facts straight before ridiculing the efforts of a great cricketer.

  • POSTED BY on | September 1, 2012, 0:53 GMT

Ajmal has been claimed by western commentators that he is the most feared bowler in the world right now. He continues to prove them right. He has also carried the burden of keeping an entire team competitive for over a year largely on his shoulders. No one can deny that he is the best bowler to watch today. This is a shameful list. Is it because the "Doosra" is taboo? If it is taboo, please make it official, because lists like this alienate an entire nation of fans.

One day cricketer :: V. Kholi, T20 Cricketer: Gayle & Emerging player : Naraine

  • POSTED BY on | August 31, 2012, 16:20 GMT

Well the only problem I have is with the "ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year" because the young 20 year old Nasir wasn't even on the list which is pretty ridiculous considering he has scored 5 50s and 1 100 in all forms in his short career plus he's the best fielder in Bangladesh and can bowl some handy off-spin. Virat Kohli should've got ODI Cricketer of the year considering his batting performances has been of top notch and yeah, Saeed Ajmal should've gotten a award for his highest wicket takings.

  • POSTED BY ThatsAlright on | August 31, 2012, 16:05 GMT

Cricketer-of-the-year equation needs to be multi-dimentional with batting, bowling, catching, stumping, direct hits, and ethical (spirit of the game) aspects of performances being taken into consideration. Any suggestions?.

Vernon should take the top honors - those numbers are simply insane and belong in the era of uncovered wickets! Few strange things here - Amla played only 8 one dayers while Sanga played 37 and dont recall Amle being injured. Also no Englishman despite reaching the number1 team and where on earth is Ajmal - this guy has bamboozled all teams. Interesting 2 Indians and SL's, the WC finalists, run for the one day cricketer of the year and Kholi will be hard to beat.

I think Sanga desrves the Player of the year and Test cricket atleast this time, every year he's been ranked no 01 in Tests batting rankings.

ODI player could be Kholi although we dislike his attitude, Dhoni, Sanga, Mali also have a chance. no clear winner in this

T20 performance of the year is definitely Mendis, he single handedly won us the match after Shane Watson brought the required run rate below 6, with 9 wickets in hand. Match was gone, but for Mendis

Thanks Sayantan, nice to see Indian fans like you

@woodhaven24 Nasir had played only 14 ODIs, due to Bangladesh's lack of performances at times that could seem very big. but if you look at the performances Pattinson and Chandimal had done lot more. Chandimal had scored more than 80% of his ODI runs in Eng, SA and Aus, something that is rare to most other subcontinent batsman. but i had a feeling that Narine might get the award not because of lot of international performances but mostly due to IPL stuff.

Mendis hasn't even played from so long. His selection is not understandable. For women's category, how can you not select Mithali Raj? Shocking that Saeed Ajmal has been discarded by ICC Awards nominees for ICC Cricketer of the year and player of the year.

Saeed Ajmal has 120 International Wickets, the most by any bowler, between 4th August 2011 and 6th August 2012 (the period for ICC Awards criteria). Ajmal also has Test 72 Wickets, again the most by any bowler, during this period. But ICC didn't even care to put him in nominees for the categories mentioned above.

ICC Cricketer of the year nominees (same for Test): Kumar Sangakkara, Michael Clarke, Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander.

  • POSTED BY on | August 30, 2012, 18:24 GMT

Being a Pakistani, I feel so bad for Saeed Ajmal. He is true candidate for nomination and Hafeez also performed well. where is ajmal, this is really sad to see that no pakistani is in that list. we won 3-0 against england and ajmal was the destroyer in that series. so sad. Phelendar is test player of the year Amla cricketer of the year

2 b fair, Hashim is the Cricketer of the year. Ranked 2nd in Test & 1st in Odi's. He is being consistant against all nations, on all conditions. Test player award: This 1 is a bit tough. Sanga has being great, Big Vern is a match winner, Hashim consistancy & Clarke, well im not sure why he's there before Ajmal. But if u look at it, Philander has only played 9 tests, out of those he has 6'5s & 1, 10 in a match, surely has to go to him. Odi player, Kohli or ABD, but the latter is not nominated.

ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year: Instead of Sanga, they should have picked AB de Villiers and for people's choice award category, they should have picked Gayle instead of Sanga. Hafiz for ICC Spirit of Cricket is just laughable to me.

My two cents: Amla for the ICC Cricketer of the Year, toss up between him and Sanga for the Test Cricketer of the Year, Virat for ODI's, Levi for the T20 award, and Narine for the Emerging Player.

  • POSTED BY on | August 30, 2012, 15:12 GMT

Imagine if WI got emerging cricketer of the year again? Wi need to learn to nutrue talent. Don't even know where Bishoo is at. We could have spin twins. It's always hard for player of the year to be a bowler. But Philander deserves it.

Emerging Player Vernon Philander. It is only fitting the top team in all three disciplines are in all the categories!

  • POSTED BY SICHO on | August 30, 2012, 14:22 GMT

It pains me how all Sri Lankas are saying Sanga should win everything he's nominated for, he got back to back 190s against Pakistan(not SA, Eng or Aus) , where as against England he did nothing at all(terrorised by Anderson). Amla is the most consistant player no doubt about that. I find it very shocking not to see Ajmal nominated and Amla not in ODIs, instead there's Malinga. Cricketer of the year=> Amla, Test cricketer of the year=> Philander. @RandyOZ, you must be joking, McKay??? What has he done that makes him deserve a nomination? BTW I'm a SAFFA, but I just think Ajmal deserves a nomination.

  • POSTED BY TheMysteryMan on | August 30, 2012, 14:05 GMT

ICC player of the year has to go to Amla this year. He has been exceptional. For ODI player of the year, Kohli should be leading. He has had exceptional year, in fact 2 years in ODI format. Test player of the year, I am little confused between Philander and Sangakara. T20 cricketer of the year is also tricky. Gayle would be no brainer usually, but he has not played much for WI.

There will be a good contest between Sanga and Amla...Amla is undoubtedly the best batsman on current arena. His consistent performance speaks alot about that...He deserves an award! Sanga on the other hand is the only batsman in the top 10 batsmen of all 3 formats of the game...He also keeps the wickets in two formats out of that...Amla is surrounded by number of top class batsmen such as De Villiers, Kallis and Smith whereas Sanga has only one world class player with him in Mahela...And we all know that Mahela is a big match player but not been consistent over the year so Sanga is carrying the whole weight of SL cricket over the years...It has been the same from August 2011 - August 2012 as well. His nomination on both ODI and Test tells us the story. I don't think that there has been a great ambassador and a popular cricketer than Sanga over the last decade. Therefore, without any doubt, he should be the cricketer of the year! Hope the panel will do a justice to this maestro!

ALL I ASK FOR IS A JUSTIFICATION FOR ALL THIS!!! Atleast nominate them to show some respect for their efforts so that they know that what they do is being recognized by the world!! ICC Cricketer of the Year should be Hashim Amla, the test series against England has proved it... I know the last test where he scored a hundred wont count because it was played after the 6th of August 2012 but he should still get the award. Kumar Sangakarra is a good player but he struggled against the same attack(ENG) in Sri Lanka, lets not forget. ICC Test cricketer of the year must be Vernon Philander(Big Vern)-He's really a superb bowler. Best of luck to everyone who nominated.

  • POSTED BY suve on | August 30, 2012, 10:30 GMT

Sanga is the Cricketer of the Year for me. The reason Malinga is nominated for ODI Player of the year is because he is the highest wicket taker in 2012 in ODI's and had a hattrick vs Aus during the last year.

A gentle request from the BCB (India Cricket Board) to kindly accept our invitation and make a tour to our war affected country. This tour should be named as peace-journey and hope with the peace will come to Afghanistan and knock on doors. Thank you Pakistan and Thank you Australia for playing with our team. It's sad that South Africa plays so little cricket per season compared to other big teams. It's no wonder that Protea player stats tend to be lower than everyone elses, and that leads to less recognition. Can only imagine the figures Amla would have ended on if SA played as many tests and ODI's as the other teams did in a season. Can't believe SL played 14 tests and 37 ODIs in one season. (Compared to 10 and 8 for SA)

Philander could be in the test player of the year but don't see how he could be nominated for cricketer of the year. What is most weird is the exclusion of Ajmal who is the best spinner in the business today. And how come Sachin who hardly played any cricket be nominated for people's choice award. • POSTED BY Jazman on | August 30, 2012, 8:41 GMT

Don't be surprised if it is Vernon Philander. I know batsmen usually get the recognition, but as far as bowling is concerned I don't think the stats could have been better for Vernon. The sides against which he has achieved them make it even more remarkable.

Absolute shocking,....... Where is best spinner in the world.who single handed destroy best team in the world ? joke. isn't it.atleast he should be in running for cricketer of the year.Virat Kholi and Sanga both defo are choice for ODI COT but how the hell dhoni and malinga got in that list ? and sachin who didin't played anything is in people choice . BIG LOL .these list are dominated by batsmen.no room for bowlers..

  • POSTED BY getsetgopk on | August 30, 2012, 7:43 GMT

This is shocking? Why are Ian Gould and Steve Davis missing from the umpire of the year list for their breath taking and match awarding performance during the gale test against SL?

  • POSTED BY on | August 30, 2012, 7:39 GMT

Shocked not to see Saeed Ajmal's name in any of the nominations... The guy lead Pakistan to thrashing England 3-0 in the Test series!

From the nominations: Cricketer of the year Sangakkara (simply becoz he is nominated in them all, means good performance), Test Cricketer of the year Amla, ODI Kohli, People's Choice Award Philander

  • POSTED BY _faraz on | August 30, 2012, 7:32 GMT

Where is Saeed Ajmal. Do doubt he is the best spinner around. He must be included in the "ICC Test Cricketer of the Year".

  • POSTED BY V.Jammy on | August 30, 2012, 7:30 GMT

What a joke!! Are you sure there isn't a printing mistake in list of nominees for People's Choice Award? What is Sachin Tendulkar doing in this list? This award is not for your performances you did 10 years ago! This is for the span between August 4, 2011, and August 6, 2012. What special you did on the cricket field in this span except hitting slow century against Bangladesh to score your 100th century!!

  • POSTED BY on | August 30, 2012, 7:29 GMT

To everyone who's merely gunning for the nominees from their home countries: broaden your gaze a bit. I agree with ana_ibrahim that Ajmal is unfortunate to miss out, but the four nominated for COY would all be worthy of the award. Amla's year has been truly outstanding, as has Philander's. I think it's down between those two - Sanga's been almost there although hasn't played the matchwinning innings with the consistency that Amla has. Although it pains me as an Aussie to say it, Clarke is in my view 4th. My vote? The bearded maestro. Brilliant in tests, and fastest man ever to 3000 ODI runs, even better than the great Sir Viv. Wow.

  • POSTED BY sonu77 on | August 30, 2012, 7:28 GMT

Instead of Philander, Saeed Ajmal should be there for ICC cricketer of the year list.Philander did nothing in ODI's & T20s to be there. But without a doubt he should be the test cricketer of the year.My predictions: ODI cricketer of the year-Virat Kohli, Test cricketer of the year: Vernon Philander,ICC cricketer of the year: Kumar Sangakkara/Amla,T20 perfomance of the year: Ajantha Mendis, Emerging player: Sunil Narine, Umpire of the year: Aleem Dar/Kumar Dharmasena.God will grab ICC people's choice Award but my choice is Kallis or Sangakkara.

  • POSTED BY highveldhillbilly on | August 30, 2012, 7:08 GMT

This is crazy. Amla not mention in the ODI players nominations....... Impossible. Surely Philander must win the test player of the year. Fast to 50 wicket since Sid Barnes, this against Aus, Sri Lanka and (to a lesser extent NZ). I suspect that Saffas don't get a big voice at these types of events.

  • POSTED BY cover_drive12345 on | August 30, 2012, 7:07 GMT

Would've liked to see AB de Villiers in more of these lists, he has been an outstanding record in the last year or so in both ODI's and Tests and for me, best batsmen of the uer(barring the god Amla) Obviously Amla will get loads but really hope Clarke gets recognition for his work for the Aus team.

  • POSTED BY on | August 30, 2012, 7:07 GMT

Sangakara all the way.Such a Master he is.

  • POSTED BY on | August 30, 2012, 7:06 GMT

Simply because of Sangakkara makes into both "ICC Test cricketer of the year" and "ICC ODI cricketer of the year", I think he deserves to be ICC Cricketer of the Year. As it doesnt not count only from one format, Philander or Clarke cannot be selected for that as they havent been good in both formats. However, Amla did. So, the choice should be between Sanga and Amla for "ICC Cricketer of the Year.
