Eoin Morgan will not face disciplinary action by Middlesex after missing their CB40 match against Lancashire at Old Trafford because he was stuck on the train from London but the club remain 'disappointed' by the situation.
Morgan was caught in disruption on the London to Manchester line from Euston station and did not make it to the ground in time for the toss which forced Middlesex to leave him out of the side for what as a key match with semi-final places at stake.
Angus Fraser, Middlesex's director of cricket, said lessons will need to be learned. "We are disappointed and frustrated it happened. It was an important match for us," he told ESPNcricinfo. "We'll have to make sure it doesn't happen again."
However, Fraser also suggested that because Morgan is still employed by the ECB on a central contact that it would be quite difficult for Middlesex to discipline him as he is not contracted to them.
The majority of Middlesex's squad travelled north on Sunday evening following the abandoned game against Leicestershire at Uxbridge although a couple of players were allowed to drive up on the morning of game. Fraser said the club were aware that Morgan wanted to take the train.
During his lengthy journey, Morgan tweeted: "Just the 7 hours to Manchester... not sure the train is an option any more!!"
He arrived shortly after the scheduled start time at Old Trafford, ironically as rain was falling so Middlesex's innings had been suspended, and watched from the dressing room. The game was curtailed to a 16-over aside match and Middlesex could only muster 97 for 8 with Lancashire chasing a slightly revised target with ease.
The result left both teams level on eight points but Lancashire jumped ahead of Middlesex by virtue of having four victories to Middlesex's three. Morgan's travel disruption could yet prove very costly for the county.

Assistant Editor Andrew arrived at ESPNcricinfo via Manchester and Cape Town, after finding the assistant editor at a weak moment as he watched England's batting collapse in the Newlands Test. Andrew began his cricket writing as a freelance covering Lancashire during 2004 when they were relegated in the County Championship. In fact, they were top of the table when he began reporting on them but things went dramatically downhill. He likes to let people know that he is a supporter of county cricket, a fact his colleagues will testify to and bemoan in equal quantities.

It is appaling to hear such a statement from Fraser......classic case of an administrator sounding like a master/ owner.......instead of a facilitator.......If Middlesex believed it was OK for Morgan to leave in train....whey complain.........if they had concerns about this scheduled journey...they should have advised Morgan BEFORE....and had he gone against their advise still...then there was a case of complaining or disciplining.
Posted byWhy should he be punished for the train being delayed?? Not his fault
Posted bythis is relly harsh.........................................how can management blame morgan for a train delay...............middlesex captain should have used a substistute in place of morgan until his arrival, but instead of doing that, they are blaming morgan...............this shows how deeply middlesex team rely on morgan
Posted by xylo on (July 17, 2012, 19:49 GMT)How could Morgan not have thought about the train getting delayed and prepared himself for teleportation? gee!
Posted by Stevros3 on (July 17, 2012, 17:07 GMT)Selassie-I, it would be harsh to blame him for a train delay had they not asked him to get the train the evening before (which according to the BBC article I read earlier they had asked him to do)
Posted by glance_to_leg on (July 17, 2012, 16:35 GMT)I am a huge fan of Fraser, but this seems unreasonable. Either Middlesex should insist that all players arrive the night before, or it should be acceptable that players make reasonable arrangements and are not then reprimanded if those arrangements go wrong through no fault of their own.
Posted byI guess the lesson for management is to hire a coach and the whole squad leave together and arrive together...Different/individual travel arrangements are always liable to lead to this sort of situation...
Posted byIf the team knew he was going up that day on the train and were okay with it then I don't think there's any reason why he should disciplined. I know first hand how bad the train situation was out of Euston all day yesterday! It'll probably lead to a change in procedure, which is probably sensible.
Posted by liaqathussain on (July 17, 2012, 15:18 GMT)so was middlesex just relying on him?
he got delayed in the train and in london,,,
thats normal these days
