Delhi Daredevils pick Bodi, Maxwell

Delhi Daredevils have picked Victoria allrounder Glenn Maxwell and South Africa batsman Gulam Bodi in their squad for the upcoming IPL season, in place of Colin Ingram and Travis Birt.

Maxwell, 23, has played 14 List A games, averaging 25.44 and has picked up nine wickets at 37.55 in the format. He holds the record for the fastest half-century, off 17 balls, in domestic List A cricket in Australia. He's also played 11 first-class matches, a format he's fared better in, and as many Twenty20 games.

"When Aashish [Kapoor, the Daredevils team manager] and I watched Glenn in the Emerging Players' Tournament in Australia in July last, we saw him as a player of immense potential who loves being in the contest," the Daredevils team mentor TA Sekar said in a release. "When we watched him bat, we were reminded of how we had spotted David Warner in 2008. We believe Glenn will play for Australia soon.

"Besides being a dashing batsman, Glenn is a solid offspinner and an amazing fielder, with infectious enthusiasm," Sekar said. "A multi-skilled player like him will add immense value to the side."

Bodi, 33, has played two ODIs and a Twenty20 for South Africa. He made his first-class debut in 1996-97 and since then has played 131 List A matches in which he's averaged 32.40. He's also played 64 Twenty20s, averaging 29.29 with a highest of 98 not out. Sekar said he remains a middle-order option.

"Gulam was the best available replacement, given that we had to find someone within Birt's base price," he said. "Just the other day, he made a belligerent 90 off 51 balls with seven fours and five sixes for the Lions against the Warriors in the Twenty20 Challenge in South Africa."

@ samroy , Andre Russell is With Delhi Daredevils & Sunil Narine is with KKR .Ravi Rampaul was Sure to Miss 70-75 % of IPL therefore , He was Not Picked By any . @ Axe_hay ,yes I too am Dissapointed that They Did Not Pick David Weise . I am A Fan of That Guy's Talent . And he Would have Only Cost 20,000 USD , Cheaper than Birt . Maxwell is Good All-Rounder , Considering Many Players DD has Picked Have Gone on to Play for Their National Teams . Lets Hope for the Best !

What happnd 2 TRAVIS BIRT ? How well did he play in d Big Bash League...... Well i think Bodi is a good replacement for Ingram as Colin doesnt look 2 b a match-winner, he looks as just stabalizing element in d line-up.

Maxwell is a good replacement,i saw him performing in the big bash league.he is a hard hitting batsman specially against batsman.

Y these guys wer replaced ???? wat hapened to birt and ingram ???

  • POSTED BY on | March 20, 2012, 0:14 GMT

Bodi was the most feared opening 2020 bastman for the last 3 seasons. He has won more domestic trophies than any other player I know and that's with the Dolphins and Titans. Opening for the Titans which include Faf du plesseis, AB d villiers, Morkel brothers Steyn is no position you get given but earned and rightly so. Bodi was part of the team which won the emerging players tournament and also the highest run scorer againt Sri Lanka A hitting 400 runs in 4 inning 50 over. Ooh 98 not out last year and 90 few days ago in the 2020 aginst bowlers like Botha, Boje, Parnell Ingram to name a few.

Ingram injured so Bodi in a poor replacement

  • POSTED BY SamRoy on | March 19, 2012, 12:29 GMT

Always picking mediocre cricketers. If you want to pick talented cricketers pick Andre Russell, Sunil Narine and Ravi Rampaul. All three having grown up in similar conditions will be a lot better than mediocre Australian and South African slam-bangers. If Pakistani cricketers were allowed Hafeez, Ajmal, Afridi and Gul should be bought in a jiffy.

  • POSTED BY axe_hay on | March 19, 2012, 12:28 GMT

Absolutely mediocre selections...it seems the selectors do not check the averages of these players...just a one match performance glance and you get a IPL contract...like Richard Levi ! I fail to understand why hard hitting talented South African Allrounders like Loots Bosman, Chris Morris and David Wiese are getting ignored by IPL teams. These guys are game changers , David Wiese is the next Lance Klusener !

Maxwell will do very well if he adapts to Indian conditions. Will become a star of the short forms for Australia if given an extended chance and could be a test option long term. Much better player than Steven Smith.

At the start of the tourney, DD will miss Warner for half the tourney, Pietersen and Jayawardene for the first couple of games. Pietersen will also be missing at the end. Well, so I guess that the first couple of games are the only ones in which they may require players, but they have Ross Taylor, Morne Morkel, Andre Russell, van der Merve, Aaron Finch etc, so still I am not sure if the two signed players will be preferred above. BTW why was Ingram and Birt withdrawn in the first place??
