Pakistan cricketers will not feature in IPL 2010 as their board has failed to obtain their visas before the deadline for confirmation of participation, the league's commissioner, Lalit Modi, has said. The franchises will now have to look for replacements for the Pakistan players they had signed, he said.
"We have been informed by the PCB that they have not been able to obtain the visas as of now. So we are not able to extend the deadline," Modi told the Times Now channel. "Today is the absolute deadline for confirmation of Pakistani players [to take part in the IPL]. The exchange window [ends] the day after tomorrow.
"Unfortunately, the Pakistani players are out and they will not be allowed to take part in the next IPL because we are handicapped by the fact that the exchange window is the day after tomorrow. We are informing the teams that they now can go for the replacement of the Pakistani players."
However officials in Pakistan are emphatic their side of the deal was done. "The players have applied for visas but the clearance hasn't come from the Indian side. The ball is not in our court," Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, said on Monday.
Wasim Bari, the PCB's chief operating officer, told Cricinfo the board was in possession of all necessary NoCs and clearance letters from the Pakistan side but had not been given visas. "From our side everything was done and in order. Players had received invitation letters from the franchises as well," he said.
Pakistan are the reigning World Twenty20 champions, and several franchises had expressed their interest in signing on the country's cricketers. Five Pakistani players - Kamran Akmal, Misbah ul-Haq, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul and Sohail Tanvir - are already on contract with IPL teams.
Last week, it had seemed that they, and several of their team-mates, would be in next year's IPL after Pakistan's foreign ministry and interior ministry cleared them to play in the Indian league. That meant the PCB could issue the NOCs necessary for Pakistan's players to be eligible for the tournament, but the inability to obtain the visas in time meant their players will have to sit out a second successive IPL.
Pakistan's players were absent from IPL's second season, held earlier this year in South Africa, after their government did not allow them to travel to India - where the tournament was originally to be held - for security reasons. The decision came in the wake of the Mumbai attacks last year, after which relations between India and Pakistan deteriorated considerably. Eleven players from Pakistan had taken part in the first IPL, though after the Mumbai attacks, only four were retained by their franchises, though their contracts were suspended until further resolution. Razzaq was signed recently by Kolkata Knight Riders.
The PCB has been keen on getting their players involved once again after Ijaz Butt, the board chairman, raised the matter on a trip to India in October and said after that the relevant government authorities had also cleared Pakistan's players to play.

All this bickering about absolute nothing. Pakistan is the best T-20 team in the world, statistically and their performance has shown that as well over a considerable period of time. So a league with international players but without the players from the world's best team in that format, does lack in game quality whether anyone admits it or not, its like having a golf major without Woods or a tennis grandslam without Federer, you might tell yourself, oh it was a success and a hit etc etc, but the fact remains that it could have been better had the best been there! : ) Good luck Pakistan : )
Posted by naga69 on (December 08 2009, 19:37 PM GMT)I have read some of these comments below and I am shocked with the narrow mindedness of some of Cricinfo readers. Cricket is a game and IPL should not be subject to any kind of political discrimination. The Indian government has screwed up. New Delhi could have easily approved visas quickly allowing the handful of players to play in the league. Indians love to talk about the necessity of keeping politics out of sports but repeatedly fails to stand by this mantra. Just as the English counties have opened slots to the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Doshi, Bishen Bedi in the past and continues to invite Indian players to play there, we should be open to Pakistanis as well. Modi should have used his good offices with Indian bureacrats and got this sorted. Sorry, Mr Modi, but you are now looking a very poor administrator.
Posted by rohan024 on (December 08 2009, 18:25 PM GMT)Well if pakistanis are so hurt by this rudeness from BCCI/India then why don't they just go on in life instead of venting out their frustation here..Its Indian PL, so stay away from it.
Posted by rohan024 on (December 08 2009, 18:19 PM GMT)well, really who cares whether Pakistani players are in IPL or not ? They may think that they are in demand and be happy about it although the truth is far from that. Anyway if Pakistani players and fans are happy thinking that this is yet another conspiracy theory, then good luck to them. I am glad that they are not in IPL.
Posted by ShahidAfridiFan on (December 08 2009, 17:17 PM GMT)Im pretty surprised that the world T20 champions did not get to play in this years edition of the IPL. I'd have thought that Modi who only sees $$ failed to notice the 170million fans in pakistan and the fans all over the world who have started to enjoy pakistans flamboyant cricketing style. There is obviously some kind of political motive behind the move of not allowing pakistani cricket fans to play in India. I mean last time i checked India had failed miserably in both world events. The BCCI doesnt want there biggest cricketing rivals to take the limelight!!
Posted by Sherz on (December 08 2009, 16:39 PM GMT)"Pakistan's players will miss the IPL for the second season running, despite getting clearances from their sports, foreign affairs and interior ministries, an NOC from the PCB and letters of invitation from IPL franchises. PCB officials are clear that all that needed to be done from their end had been done, indicating that clearance ultimately hadn't been given by the Indian government, either at all, or within the required time."
Posted by Fizz14 on (December 08 2009, 15:47 PM GMT)Only happens in Mr.Lalit Modi's IPL that "World Champions" are not allowed to participate. Lets see...clearance from Pakistan sports, foreign affairs and interior ministries all okay. Even got NOC from PCB and invitation letters from franchises. Wheres the problem, Indian visa. Nice way to keep Pakistani players out of picture.
Posted by Hammad.Fayyaz on (December 08 2009, 14:37 PM GMT)I am happy that Paki players are not participating in the 3rd IPL session. I want our players to take rest for the T20 WC in West Indies... this IPL session can perhaps leads to the players burn-out, as it happened with Indian Players in the Champions Trophy (as admittied by senior Indian Players On Champions League). Personally I dont like the IPL format AT ALL, because its so long and tiring.. have the memories of 2007 WC in West Indies. Also if the Pak Champs won't be the part of that session... it will be like 'show without show-stoppers'. Pak are the best T20 side in the world, for the last 2 yrs or so. Its a blessing in disguise for Pakistan.
Posted by haha123456 on (December 08 2009, 13:54 PM GMT)It is clear that the IPL organizers didnot want the WorldChampions to participate in the event. It is crystal clear that the guys like ShahidAfridi, ImranNazir,UmerAkmal and MohammedAmer,UmerGul,SajidAjmal will steal the show if they participate and the organizers didnot want that to happen. They are saying just lame excuses. Anyhow without the WorldChampions, IPL will be another failure and they are the losers indeed.
