Virender Sehwag has been named captain of the Rest of India squad that will take on Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai in the Irani Cup match to be played from February 6 to 10 at the Wankhede Stadium. Sreesanth, who picked up 10 wickets from four matches in the Ranji Trophy, and Harbhajan Singh, who took 16 wickets from five matches, were also in the squad.

The team included Manoj Tiway, who recovered from a side strain, and openers Shikhar Dhawan and M Vijay, who were named ahead of Jiwanjot Singh, the leading run-scorer this Ranji season.

Ishwar Pandey, the highest wicket-taker of the Ranji season, was rewarded for his performances with a call-up. Suresh Raina and Shami Ahmed, who played in the ODI series against England, were also named in the squad. However, MS Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir were not included. A missing name was that of Punjab seamer Siddarth Kaul, the second-highest wicket taker of the season.

Good to see Viru given a chance and asking him to lead is a nice gesture. Also, Ojha will get a chance to get some match practice before the test series, and Sree & Raina will get a chance to force their way back into the test team. It would've been interesting if Kohli was playing and he was named the captain..they could've seen how he'll adjust to captaining the side. But maybe they just wanted to give him some rest since he's been playing nonstop...overall, a good side.

There is no Gambhir. Does this mean that he will not be playing in the test series? Or is he given a break? If he's going to be selected in the test squad, then this makes no sense. This could've been a chance to get him back into form.

NICE to see the SELECTORS spreading their wings. This way we can get to see the star players of future and prepares an even bigger pool.

Once again these selection shows the incompetence and flaws of our selection system the reason why there is never the best indian team on the field....on what basis are Mukund,Vijay,Gony,Vinaykumar,Ladda Selected....Why is there no place for any player from the Services team especially there fast bowling attack is one of the best in indian domestic system right now also why is sandeep sharma, S.kaul , R.Dhawan not been played. S.Nadeem has been the leading spinner in Ranji season but still there is no place for him in any of the teams.

The indian selectors should really be ashamed this is just ridicolous. Still best of luck to Sree, Ahmed and Saxena all 3 of them should be in the indian test team if fit

@RijuRaj : but they should have been given a chance in India A against Aus...atleast Jaffer should have been tested for the opener's slot...The guy averages more in the domestic circuit than anyone else and going by the form he has shown in recent time should be given another chance...its not as if we are having openers aplenty ready to face the Aussies pace attack

  • RajeshNaik on January 31, 2013, 1:07 GMT

The selectors look pretty confused! They probably thought, 'hence we have surplus of talent (!) lets fix them all in 3 teams'. It would have been a much better choice if the best of the lot were picked and made to play against the Aussies, whereas the ROI team should feature only the test team + reserve players for the test team. I feel sad for Badrinath. He deserves one more chance in the test team and should have been in ROI. Some pre conceived notions are working in his case which is very unfortunate. Raina & Yuvraj should never play test cricket for India and hence they shouldn't be there in ROI. Some players (Uthappa, Mithun, Vijay, Gony & Menaria) are lucky to be there. Some (Pankaj Singh, Rishi Dhawan) are unlucky to miss out. I still feel Vinay Kumar deserves the place, as he missed T20 WC & England One day series due to injury. I hope the low profile Jalaj Saxena shines. He has been a consistent performer and his success would be the success of Ranj Trophy setup and system.

  • PratUSA on January 30, 2013, 22:22 GMT

Someone explains why in the ROI squad you got 6 batsmen, 1 WK who are all certain to play and 7 bowlers of which 4 won't play? Crazy selection. It's good to see only 12 being selected for other two squads. The choice of personals is always debatable.

Abhishek Nayyar will be very good addition to India. A very good all rounder but very unlucky. I strongly believe Irfan Pathan + Abhishek Nayyar + R.Jadeja in team will help balance our ODI team to a great extent. We can go in with 3 specialist bowlers ( Shami + Bhuvneshwar + Spinner) who bowl their full quota. Pathan/Nayyar/Raina/Jadeja can bowl the rest 20 among-st themselves and all 3 are not just containing bowlers but chip in with useful wickets. Batting should be Rahane and Nayyar opening with Kohli/Dhoni/Yuvraj/Rohit or tiwary or Rayudu/Raina to follow

Good that Sehwag is the captain. It will give him one good chance to redeem. Also this will be last chance for Sreesanth and Bhajji to catch the selectors eye. Sehwag must play in the middle order at no.5 or 6 which helps him a lot. My best wishes are with Sree, Viru and Bhajji. Hope they get back to form and play for India.

Why not Ravindra Jadeja is selected in any team even after a good Ranji Season.....

  • Kushalagr007 on January 30, 2013, 6:46 GMT

The Selection is absolutely pathetic...... I just dont understand in which direction the selectors are thinking??? The last Test match we played we had Awana & Dinda in the squad but now Dinda is not there in any of the squad and Awana is in only for the 2 day game agst. Aussies, what does that mean? And in that last Test we played Chawla & Jadeja, they are also not in any team. It looks like the Test Team agst. Aussies is already selected.

And Australia will be playing a T20I agst. WI on 13th Feb in Brisbane, then how will they play 2 day warm up match in Chennai on 12-13th Feb only BCCI knows.

  • D.Bagherwal on January 30, 2013, 6:14 GMT

Please shut down Ranji trophy as there is no respect for the Ranji performances. BCCI should only encourage T20 tournaments. Parthiv, Jeevanjot, rahane & pujara should have been given chance in Rest of India squad.

This team would have allowed entry to only top performer in ranji. I.pandey highest wicket taker, S.kaul no 2., Vishal joshi best off spinner of season, and Nadeem best left arm spin, CM Gautam best WK, Nayar best allrounder, best openers Jaffer and Jiwanjot. and 3 main batsmen who are next in line for middle order slot in tests. no 3. It's really a big question mark on selectors that how come MITHUN & VINAY are selected ahead of PANKAJ, M SHARMA & S KAUL...& the biggest joke is Chwala who palyed in the series against England isn't in any of the three squads...now I'm pretty sure that selections are mostly blind who just selects on the basis of quota system....Sarabjit Ladda is a good selection..instead of ROBIN UTHAPPA, chances could have been given to AKSHATH REDDY...while STUART BINNY should have been replaced by RISHI DHAWAN who is faster, younger & better allrounder than Binny...Manish Pandey could have been drafted in place of M Vijay..who is good for nothing.

Where are any of Wasim Jaffer, Aditya Tare, Hiken Shah and most importantly Abhishek Nayar?????So the selectors think that the players who won the Ranji are not good for intl matches, rather giving the chance to the players who have already wasted them a million times???On what basis Harbhajan and Sreesanth have been chosen???

  • Des_65 on January 30, 2013, 1:54 GMT

Those whose places are doubtful in the Indian team are included in the three teams to claim their place in the Indian team. I think this means B. Kumar, Kohli, Dhoni, Ashwin, Pujara, Tendulkar are already assured a place in the test team whereas Yuvraj is either assured or not assured (not to be tried in one of the teams). Mumbai team has some missing players. Rohit Sharma & Ajinkya Rahane have never played a test match so far.

  • here2rock on January 30, 2013, 0:05 GMT

What is the purpose of Irani Cup? The selectors will still pick the same eleven they have probably already picked like squad against England. The performances in these matches will not make any difference whether they will be picked in the side against Australia.

Since everyone is chipping in with there list of omissions, i will partake in the same, i mostly agree with the guys below but will add Saurabh Tiwary much maligned million dollar man who scored runs on difficult pitches for jharkhand and Manish Pandey because he is a class player, Unmukt Chand is one for the future, dissapointing to see the same fast bowlers again and again and no wild card picks/Imagination on any 140 plus speed bowlers probably from states not seen on TV or any spinner who flights the ball and really gives it a rip, R.Dhruv and J Saxena are a start and thank heavens no Piyush Chawla but Bhajji is lucky as he was outbowled by Vishal Joshi of Saurashtra in Ranji semis

Guess with selectors naming only 12 member squad limited the chances of some players.

  • Dhanno on January 29, 2013, 21:15 GMT

Raina and talent are two words whose use should not be excused in single sentence. Raina. Flat track bully. Period. Mumbai attack was gritty but they are not world class (none in indian domestic circuit is). If raina scores 80 odd runs against Mumbai, he will be suddenly shoe-in for Australia test. Its a joke of selection to have someone like Raina/ Sharma near ROI team.

India has sufficient Talent to be the Top Cricketing Nation right now. All it needs is to establish a good Criteria for selection of the Team. Every country follows Fitness, Form & Performance as the selection Criteria. If the 3 teams are selected based on these the Selection committee will always be the Winners. The easiest way is to compile the current stats of Top 50 Batsmen & Bowlers in the First class Cricket from 2012-13 season via courtesy of S.Rajesh. Rest those guys who played too many matches. From the rest 3 teams can be easily chosen in an impartial & fair manner. This process will be appreciated both by the players & Fans. Similarly also pick 6 potential Leadership Candidates who are excellent players & justify their spot in the XI. From these pick 2 for each format & rotate them to find the best 3 guys. This is simple logic based on common sense. I found the last 3 Team & squad selection were devoid of any criteria. The present 3 teams still miss some really talented guys!

  • RK.Chandru on January 29, 2013, 18:49 GMT

Parthiv can only score in domestic cricket. he doesn't have the class to excel in international arena and in pitches abroad. I do think, Pankaj, Dinda and Sreesanth in pace bowling, M. Vijay, Shikar Dhavan, Rahane among openers, Manoj Tiwari, Rayudu, Badri (though age isn't there in his side) among middle order batsmen, Saha & DK for test, shorter format cricket in that order do need to be tried with enough chances here and abroad. I do not see any promising spin bowlers at all currently who could do well against international batsmen. Ashwin stands exposed and even Ojha and Jadeja can never win matches on their own. BCCI needs to act fast to find and nurture spinners. Ashwin would do well to sign a county team and play cricket in England for a season to hone his skills in bowling under the guidance of an ace ex-spinner.

In the ROI squad, I felt the need to have a XI close to the Test Team of the Future such as Dhawan, Mukund/J.Singh, Pujara, Kohli, Tiwary, Raina, Saha, Nadeem, V.Joshi,I.Pandey, Yadev. There is no point in having Sehwag Captain ROI unless he features in the Future plans.Pujara & Tiwary are 2 potential captains. The Selectors needed some plan in team selection. For the other 2 teams, again the captaincy is being scattered amongst Mukund & Dhawan. Are they the Captaincy candidates of the future? Always choose a guy who is guaranteed a place in the XI based on his current Form. Neither Dhawan nor Mukund are considered by the same selectors to be good in the squads. Why waste chances in aimless selection? I can understand resting of recognized players. But guys like Rahane, Tiwary, Pujara & Rahul Sharma have been adorning the Bench for ages under Dhoni. Let these guys play & prove their mettle, although Pujara is dropped even after doing so. Leadership & Vision badly lacking - Sad status!

Punjab's Uday Kaul is one of the finest keepers in the country with a 50+ batting average. He is never considered for national honours just because he gets no visibility in the IPL. There should have been someone from the Services team. These guys played with grit and determination this season. Yashpal Singh has a 50+ average but is never in the selectors radar. The other talented players who missed the bus - Badrinath,Pankaj Singh, Abhishek Nayar, Manish Pandey,Iqbal Abdulla and Samad Fallah.

  • Rumy1 on January 29, 2013, 15:09 GMT

First on ROI team...Sehwag, Bhajji, Pragyan Ojha, M.Tiwary and Sreesanth making a comeback is fine. Sehwag, Ojha and Bhajji will get some match practice before the Test series as they are certainties now. Sreesanth will have a good chance to make a comeback into Test team joining B.Kumar and Shami Ahmed. Good Kohl, and Dhoni were rested. I think performance of Mukund and Awana will be of some interest to selectors in Board Presidents match. Performance of Jiwanjot, Rahane, Kulkarni and Tiwary will be of interest to selectors in India A team's match with Aussies. Irani trophy match between Mumbai and ROI teams will be of some interest too. Jaffer will have another shot to push his claim to Gambhir's opening slot as Gauti certainly looks on his way out and very rightly so. Tiwary,Pandey and Sreesanth's performances will be on watch here for Tests. Sehwag will have some batting practice. So will Bhajji (as Ashwin is surely on his way out and very rightly so) and so will Ojha and Shami

  • Sudarshanj on January 29, 2013, 14:55 GMT

I was really excited about Jiwanjyot singh as someone wrote that he had made most of his runs on seaming mohali pitch. But it was appalling to say the least when i watched him play live in semifinal against saurashtra. The guy doesn't have any technique whatsoever while playing on front foot. Thats just criminal for an opener. Has long way to go for him to be india prospect. More disturbing was the fact that no seamer tried to exploit that weakness in league stage. Dont know whether batsmen are more mediocre or bawlers :-(

  • RK.Chandru on January 29, 2013, 14:45 GMT

Where's Dinesh Karthik? Saha is sure good for test cricket and will sure be found wanting for limited overs cricket. Parthiv on all the occasions tested proved, he's not up to the mark. DK will be an asset in short forms and sure deserves a chance.

@Ranta - Rishi Dhawan's name comes to mind. He should have been included in at least one squad. We need a bowling all rounder who bowls at least medium pace. Rishi ticks the boxes. His record is excellent. Also, Jadeja should have been tried in a game against Aussies. To see if he can cope up.

Where is Pathan? Is he still injured?

  • CricketMaan on January 29, 2013, 14:37 GMT

So what sense does it make to not play Ishwar against Aussies! Are they trying to hide him from them. If he is the best in Ranji then test him against the Best..A noticalbe inclusion is Jalaj Saxena..can he put pressure on Ashwin. I doubt that will happen until MSD is the Test captain. And the same goes with Sreesanth. You dont need to hide these from Aussies, rather challenge them to go and show they have it in them to rock the Aussies..Too defensive, just like what they did against England.

  • laxmanrules on January 29, 2013, 14:07 GMT

Just replace Uthappa with Dhawan./Jiwanjot in the BPXI squad and I say they'll beat the "real" Indian team 8 times out of 10 on seaming tracks. Solid class in Rayudu and Mandeep there. Wish them all the success and hope to see them donning the india cap soon.

  • Rumy1 on January 29, 2013, 14:06 GMT

Selectors could have done no wrong in appreciating the recent good performances of likes of Abhisek Nayar (Mumbai), S.Kaul (Punjab), S.Nadeem (Jharkhanad), Sandeep Sharma (Punjab) in including them for either Board PresidentsXI or India A.

Abhishek Nayar certainly deserves to be in ODI team for sure if not in Test team. Shikhar Dhawan is another guy who should be in ODI team at the top of the order replacing Gambhir.

For Tests, both Akshath Reddy and Jiwanjot are good prospects for opening slot. Vijay and Mukund do not have the technique and class to survive in Tests. Jaffer will serve the team well for another three-four years. With Sehwag on the decline, these two lads should be ready for taking over from senior guys.

Rahane and Rohit must improve their temperament and range of shots and polish their technique against the swinging pacy stuff -because they have the talent to grab the middle order slots in Test XI.

Sreesanth has a golden chance to grab a slot in Test XI.

  • BashTheFreak on January 29, 2013, 14:04 GMT

Where is Badri ??? Rohit Sharama spoiled career of many upcoming player and didnt made one for him.. Its still mysterious why Dhoni keeping Rohit and so called all -rounder Jadeja.. Test cricket is dying in India..

  • DeepakSarathy on January 29, 2013, 13:43 GMT

Australia playing two day game in chennai when their one day series against WI is still going on?? Crazy scheduling right there!!!

  • madhu-82 on January 29, 2013, 13:35 GMT

What wrong did pujara commited to be not part of any of sqads . so pujara goes in to bat against australian quicks with in first one hour after being absent for one and half month of any competitive cricket, great thinking by selectors who are preparIng team for another debacle. Hope no one is playing games behind the screens in ruining his career.

  • CricketMaan on January 29, 2013, 13:30 GMT

So clearly its zonal system. How else will you explain Robin Uttapa and Abimanyu mithun's selection or even Mukund for BPXI. Vijay along with Rahane are struggling for runs. Parthiv is still inferior to DK, if both are not in contention to replace Dhoni they why not play Aditya Tare? And is Umesh still injured, only he knows. Doesnt seem like BCCI knows it. Ohja is playing coz he needs match practise, and where is Amit Mishra who was warming bench? If Jadeja is the next best thing in domestic cricket why not test him against Aussies in India A. Poor Dinda he is not even worth a place in B teams. He better sorts his short bolwing issue.

  • Ranta on January 29, 2013, 13:26 GMT

I see it as a commendable job done by new selectors. The point here is they have provided almost all the available talent with an opportunity to put forward their case before team is selected for test matches. Assuming there are few places up for grab in Test team. What I like about these selectors is that they are giving chances to pool of players rather then just restricting themselves to a few. Giving chance to 50 domestic cricketers is a good concept as it helps them with confidence when they feature in teams beyond state team. And also helps increase level of domestic cricket. We can all have our fav players but its about giving chance to maximum no of players which they have done by selecting various players for tour games. And if you go by hint those who have are in two teams are being keenly looked at by selectors and ones who have performed recently in Ranji have also been given a look in to see them again. Good for Indian cricket.

  • Surajdon9 on January 29, 2013, 13:25 GMT

Captain sehwag ha ha ha..Gambhir need to be dropped for at least 2 years across all format..

  • nair248 on January 29, 2013, 13:13 GMT

NAYAR will not be missed becoz he wil be playing against ROI in that game

  • NavinKumar on January 29, 2013, 13:10 GMT

@Prats6 : Kohli and Pujara own their places in the Test XI. This is a chance for some other players (Manoj Tiwary, Rayudu, Raina e.t.c. to show their talent ahead of Australia series.

  • Nagendren on January 29, 2013, 13:10 GMT

Dissappointed not to see bhuvaneswar kumar in any of the three teams.BCCI could have tried him out in tests and look how he goes about.Raina selection in ROI was very much the right decision. He is in good form and if he can use this oppourtunity and score runs he could become a very good test batsman for India.I feel he should be given a chance also in the upcoming australian series just after looking at his temperament in the england odi series.

  • sonipatX1 on January 29, 2013, 13:07 GMT

manpreet gony gets a go again despite for the whole season he was outbowled by sandeep sharma & s kaul...cant understand

  • cenitin on January 29, 2013, 13:06 GMT

Biggest shock....No A Nayar in BP XI team. I think selectors know he would play Irani game. But Mithun, Gony and Vinay selections are also surprising. I would have prefered Kaul and Sanddep Sharma. Good Rohit, Rahane and Tiwary are gettingt a chance in Ind A team. I know many would criticize for giving Rohit many chances but mind you he never got a single chance in test matches and he was in the line after Kohli in Aus. He deserved this after good Ranji season.Good to see I Pandey, Rayudu are also getting chances. Before Aus series selctors wants to test Sehwag, Raina, Sreesanth and Bhaji one last time. No harm in that.

  • InsideHedge on January 29, 2013, 13:02 GMT

Really pointless to have Sehwag in the Rest of India side, never mind as captain. This indicates that the brain dead selectors haven't ruled him out for the Tests against Australia. Minor relief that the likes of Gambhir and Dinda (Ganguly favourite) are missing from all the squads.

Other amusements include Robin Uthappa, I wonder how many more viewings are required to confirm that this man is hopelessly out of his depth. I'm assuming that the missing Irfan Pathan and Umesh Yadav are still injured - both these injuries have received no media coverage yet these two are very important players for India.

  • ParagRaj on January 29, 2013, 13:02 GMT

Wonder why Kaul, Nayar and Pujara are missing. Especially Pujara can do with match practice as he was forced to warm up bench during ODI & Ranji final. BTW, are Umesh Yadav and Aaron Varun unfit? If not then they should be in one of the squads.

  • crazyworldthis on January 29, 2013, 12:59 GMT

Where is Bhuvaneshwar Kumar? Or do the selectors feel he is only good for limited overs?

  • sonipatX1 on January 29, 2013, 12:59 GMT

this was supposed to be the team comprising of best performers from ranji this this year. surprised to see Murali vijay & mithun getting selected ahead of Jiwanjot singh & rahul dewan in the rest of india squad.

  • on January 29, 2013, 12:58 GMT

If Dinesh Karthick was called as back up for Dhoni in one of the matches why hasn't he been selected in any of the teams. Ashwin should have been in Rest of India team to get back his form. May be he is reckoned as a first selection even after his poor form.

  • on January 29, 2013, 12:57 GMT

How can Abhishek Nayar reported to be missing out in ROI team here - he plays for Mumbai :)

  • Prats6 on January 29, 2013, 12:56 GMT

@Sean .. Nayar could have been played against the Aussies, I meant. Bigger question... What is the logic of the 3 squads? I cant find expect any except keep giving chances to the same old failures! What has Harbhajan done to get a place in ROI? Ridiculous !

  • hayer on January 29, 2013, 12:56 GMT

how can Shikhar Dhawan be in two teams!!! selected in Rest of India and captaining the India A?

  • here2rock on January 29, 2013, 12:56 GMT

Just one word, rubbish! The problem is that Cricinfo won't take less than 25 character!

  • Rumy1 on January 29, 2013, 12:56 GMT

First on ROI team...Sehwag, Bhajji, Pragyan Ojha, M.Tiwary and Sreesanth making a comeback is fine. Sehwag, Ojha and Bhajji will get some match practice before the Test series as they certainties now. Sreesanth will have a good chance to make a comeback into the test team joining B.Kumar and Shami Ahmed. Good Kohli and Dhoni were rested. I think performance of Mukund and Awana will be of some interest to the selectors in the Board Presidents match. Performance of Jiwanjot, Rahane, Kulkarni and Tiwary will be of interest to the selectors in the India A team's match with Aussies. The Irani trophy match between Mumbai and ROI team will be of some interest too. Jaffer will have another shot to cement his claim to Gambhir's opening slot as he looks certainly on his way out and very rightly so. Tiwary, Pandey and Sreesanth's performances will be on watch here. Sehwag will have some batting practice. So will Bhajji (as Ashwin is surely on his way out and very rightly so) and so will Ojha.

Can anyone explain ,, why Surech Raina in the squad ?

  • on January 29, 2013, 12:47 GMT

Abhishek Nayar can't be selected in the Rest of India squad because he is already in the Mumbai squad for the Irani Trophy game.

  • Prats6 on January 29, 2013, 12:45 GMT

What sort of squad is this for ROI? No Pujara, Kohli? The same old names make up 90% of the 3 squads? Am I seeing this correct? Where is Bhubneshwar Kumar, Shahbaz Nadeem, Nayar, Joshi (Saurastra)? This is pathetic. Not even in the worst of my dreams can I select such a squad. Saurastra were the runner up in Ranajis , no player in ROI? Horrible.
