Bangladesh to play extra T20 in Netherlands

ESPNcricinfo staff
36

Bangladesh will play an extra Twenty20 game during the Netherlands leg of their European tour, taking on the home side on Thursday. They were initially scheduled to play only one T20 against Scotland on Tuesday, and another against Netherlands at The Hague on Wednesday.

Bangladesh are currently ranked No. 4 in the ICC's Twenty20 rankings, after blanking Ireland 3-0 last week. To qualify for a position, the rankings require that teams play a minimum of eight T20 matches since August 1st, at least two years ago. Bangladesh would have lost their place in the rankings next month as, by the original schedule, they would have played only seven T20s in the qualifying period. The additional match will help them fulfill the qualification requirements.

Bangladesh are not getting enough support from India and Pakistan for developing players into a very good quality players compared with Netherlands, Ireland and Scotland get from England and Wales Cricket. Therefore; people should not questioning Bangladesh players are doing well only in home condition. If you compare than I remember Pakistan and India have some woeful results with so many excuses even after winning world cups let alone between 1950-1983 series records. Present world champion India is not doing well in abroad series. Pakistan and Sri Lanka are not doing well consistently either in home or abroad series. Finally, I do not believe in ranking and I agree with most of them that Bangladesh should not be ranked 4 (now 9 or 10) although we are by nature biased with statements. I feel, we (Bangladesh) requires more quality players to do well more consistently in world cricket.

I do not understand why people do not agree that BD is improving a lot and we are no more underdog. I our day we can beat any team.

Bangladesh should've played an extra T20 against Scotland just to make it a bit more interesting and see whether that win was a fluke.

T 20 Ranking system is stupid, how can a team gain places after beating some unheard cricketing nation ? B'desh and Z'babwe should stand bottom of the table, well after T20 wc they will for sure

Losing to Scotland should put them back in their place & bring them down to earth... LoL

For all the people raving about their recent performances, especially in Asia Cup.. the only reason they did well was because they were playing @ home where they have always have done okay (remember 2 years ago when they whitewashed NZ & everyone thought they had finally raised their standard to match top 8 teams.. but then their display against WI in WC really showed they still have waaaays to go! No way is BD better in T20s than Pakistan, Australia & even India (IPL is really paying off! ranked 8th LoL)..

All who boasted how good the Bangladesh team are (just bcoz of the whitewash against Ireland) can eat their words. Oh god ! No.4 team got beaten by Scotland

  • Omarrz on July 24, 2012, 14:28 GMT

It is so funny how Bangladesh has become no. 4 by beating teams like Ireland, Netherlands, Scotland who by the way are not even ranked yet.

  • M_Rakibul_Islam on July 24, 2012, 14:06 GMT

ICC Ranking of T20 shouldn't b counted by any nation including minnows as it's misleading. Since there r very few no. of T20 matches played by most of the nation, 1/2 win will bring a bottom team to a high rank. Most of the BD players r not giving importance to this ranking according to BD news sites. ICC T20 ranking will b as logical as Test & ODI ranking when a good no. of T20 will b played each season.

  • Htc-Android on July 24, 2012, 14:05 GMT

i hope netherlands play ryan ten doeshete. he is a world class player and can represent any side in the world. i saw him scoring a hundred against england in the world cup and he almost single handedly took the game away from england. im sure he can win t20 matches single handedly against bangladesh.

  • on July 24, 2012, 14:01 GMT

We should not care too much about the rankings right now. The important thing is to play more and get more experience before the World Cup. The ranking of Bangladesh will certainly start to drop when they play Australia, Pakistan and India. So it's a good start, but it will be hard work to maintain this current rank. I am just hoping Bangladesh does not loose any of the games with Scotland and Netherlands. Because it can happen in T20 easier than in ODI and it will be embarrassing.

  • on July 24, 2012, 13:17 GMT

People r so funny. Why don't u all accept d fact?? Just wait & see how much BD has improved. World cup will b d true field to prove. Still want to talk then ask ur cricket board to invite BD. last match India scored 300+ bt today ?? Can u say India isnt a good team & only perform on their day??

  • on July 24, 2012, 13:03 GMT

Anybody know if Doeschate is going to play or not??? Btw, I'm really glad for Netherlands :-) They are getting games against full members :)))

  • Fogu on July 24, 2012, 12:20 GMT

ICC ranking is just that, a ranking system based on criteria agrred upon by members. The same fans who were touting India as #1 is now whining that Bangladesh is #4. Either you agree with ICC ranking or not, at least don't be a hypocrite. Regardless of the ranking, Bangladesh has improved tremendously (without India's support I might add) and hopefully continue to inprove. It is great to have more teams in Test arena. We should help Ireland, Netherlands, Afghanistan and others to improve and join the test ranks.

  • fr600 on July 24, 2012, 12:01 GMT

No disagreement on the ranking software. We have seen how poor the ranking system is, it was poor 50 years ago when in 1973 they ranked India no.1 only to see India get bowled out for 42 in England in 1974, losing the series by huge margin. They lost to Australia in Australia and WI at home; provig the no 1 ranking was a farce. We saw history repeating last year, when the so called no 1 lost 8 test matches overseas in a row, 4 of which were by an innings, lowest margin 122 runs. As for "real" teams, you said the following before IRE series "Bangladesh will lose this series given their poor performance for past 10-12 years. People who think they did well in Asia Cup are putting too much effort on other team's bad performance rather than Bangladesh's performance. Bangladesh won few matches in Asia cup because other teams played bad cricket." Well BD won the series 3-0, now what? Are you ready to accept you were wrong? or Did IRE play bad in all 3 games as well? (Courtesy: r0ketman)

Very good news for Bangladesh and Netherlands. Bangladesh will have good chance to prepare for t-20 world cup and Netherlands will get chance to play with big team.

  • on July 24, 2012, 11:19 GMT

Bangladesh are getting better...but No.4 is way too high for them..dont think they have beaten teams number 5-7 too many times last year

  • Biren4u on July 24, 2012, 11:18 GMT

BD AT 4TH..U WANT TO SAY THEY R BETTER THAN INDIA,AUS,PAK?.. OK TEL ME WHEN DID BD BEAT ANY TEST LEVEL TEAM IN T20? Twice, they beat Windies twice in t20 cricket...THEY NEVER BEAT IND,AUS,PAK N AT 4TH...IS THERE ANY ROCKEAT SCIENCE OF THT RANKING?

  • Eat_Sleep_Play_Cricket on July 24, 2012, 11:09 GMT

Okay! Congratulations Bangla and We accept you are the team to beat. - On behalf of cricketing fans from (Aus, Sri, Pak, India, Eng, WI, NZ, Zim, Saf, Ire, Scotland, Kenya, Bermuda, UAE, Afganistan).

  • TheBlackMonk on July 24, 2012, 11:06 GMT

Good thinking, one match against Netherlands was not justifying enough. Hope Tendo plays and will give BD a good headache. BD can try new options now, hope Nazmul and Safiul get enough chances in rest of the matches.

  • shafiqul_alam2000 on July 24, 2012, 10:59 GMT

I am really happy to see Bangladesh in the T20 ICC ranking. It doesn't matter if Bangaldesh beat top teams or not. Reality is that they are in the 4th Place in the ranking list. We must remember that in Ireland to win the series agaist Ireland...3-0 is not easy. Bangladesh in the 4th place as they played in overseas and also beat 9th rank team. I am expecting Bangladesh will progress to quarter final in the T20 world cup. I would like to congratulate all players, coaching staff and officials to achieve this rare success. I wish more success in test and one day games and improve their ranking.

  • Meety on July 24, 2012, 10:32 GMT

Blimey! At this rate Bangladesh will be ranked #1 by the end of next week - LOL!

  • Monjur_Elahi on July 24, 2012, 10:05 GMT

Great staffs by Bangladesh! We like this, as an Aussie would like AUS at no 2, as an Indian would like to see them in No 2..... ;-) I am sure this ranking thing has been agreed and accepted by all and therefore, BAN is placed in a well deserved place. Well done tigers.

  • nazmulrana on July 24, 2012, 9:59 GMT

bangladeshis dont want to be removed from the ranking. for this they are playing another match. I think its not a metter of joke because not a single test playing nation would like to see themselves outside the ranking.

  • on July 24, 2012, 9:50 GMT

I'm glad to see more associates playing!

I still think the European teams should do a cricketing version of the 6 nations - and it could even be held during the IPL window, England and Ireland might lose a couple of players but otherwise could be really beneficial for all - and there would be public interest!

    * England * Scotland * Ireland * Netherlands

And to make it even more interesting, could offer one place to the "best of the rest" - i.e. the winner of a pre-qualifier between the likes of Italy, Denmark etc.
