The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has invited Dav Whatmore to Pakistan to discuss the terms of becoming their next head coach, a board official has said. Whatmore, along with Julian Fountain, who is tipped to be the new fielding coach, will arrive in Pakistan in the second week of January next year.

We are in discussions with [Dev] Whatmore," Subhan Ahmed, the PCB's chief operating officer told ESPNcricinfo. "In fact, we have called him next month to negotiate and hope to reach a final agreement with him."

Whatmore is the current head coach of the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, and is a former coach of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He has been in talks with the PCB's search committee for a few months but both sides have failed to reach an agreement so far. The committee is believed to favour hiring home-grown batting and bowling coaches, given Pakistan's traditional strength in these disciplines, but is keen on having Whatmore and Fountain be the head coach and fielding coach respectively.

One sticking point with Whatmore is that his contract with Knight Riders runs until December 2012, and his desire to wait until after IPL 2012 ends in May is the main reason the PCB has delayed appointing a full-time coaching staff. Earlier this month, Mohsin Khan was named interim coach for the England series.

Fountain has worked with the PCB before in 2001 and 2006 under former Pakistan coaches Richard Pybus and Bob Woolmer. He was the specialist fielding coach for Bangladesh from August 2010 until the end of the 2011 World Cup and has previously worked with the England and West Indies teams as well. If he signs a deal with the board, Fountain could join the squad for the England series.

Not bad for Pakistan. With Whatmore there should be just Asist Coach and Aqib is gud choice for that.

I am afraid Dave may lose all his reputations with the Pakistan duty. His type of coach is excellent with the Lankans, ok with the Bangladeshis; but difficult with the Pakistanis. Pakistan needs Pakistani coaches to understand the complicated team chemistry.

Pakistan is doing gud not because of Mohsin Khan its because they came under swear pressure after spot fixing era, which ultimately led them towards playing with eager and hunger.... So we definately need a specilist for this job and watmore is certainly a specialist for this job... Mohsin is better as chief Selector

Bad Decision again by the PCB (Money Mongers). PCB can setup a group of coaches in domestic circuit (where actually coaches are required) in the pay they are going to give to Mr. Whatmore (What more can he do :)? I don't understand) They are paying much to the PCB officials than the Players who are actually serving their country . Their pay should be less than the players.

Point of bringing Out siders is...Govt & Political pressure won't effect them . The locals are more or less political or management dummies . They can't pressurize foreign coaches ...else they will quit and that will lead to the impression that "Pakistani Political structure is effecting its cricket"

The PCB's number one task needs to be to take Mohammed Amir under its wing and get him to be an ICC anti-corruption poster boy in return for amnesty from his ban in around one year's time. Bowlers like him come around once every 25 years and while Pakistan is filling its boots on flat wickets now it needs him onboard for the challenge of finally winning series in South Africa (Jan 13) and West Indies (May 13). Whatmore may be a good acquisition, but the PCB really needs to guide Amir in his rehabilitation. At the same time there must be no support for Butt and Asif, who were old enough to know better. 365 days from now the South Africa tour will be under way: the PCB needs to be resolving the situation with the ICC NOW.

Mohsin Khan is doing a great job as head coach. Why to bring foreign coach when we have talented ex players in Pakistan. What kind of results PCB is looking from Pakistan team by hiring watmore. Pakistan have won most of the series they played in year 2011. It looks like that PCB wants to destroy well set management and want pakistan cricket go back to 2010 year. No body can satisfy PCB at all. They like outsider more than insiders. Brainless PCB
