Younis Khan pushed up to category A contract

23

Younis Khan has been bumped up to Pakistan's top category of central contracts, after the PCB amended the criteria by which players are allotted contracts. Younis had been slotted into category B when the contracts were announced last week, a move that was heavily criticised across the country.

The PCB released a list of 31 contracted players, and while Misbah-ul-Haq, Mohammad Hafeez, Saeed Ajmal, Shahid Afridi, Junaid Khan were in the top bracket, Younis - a veteran of 89 Tests and 253 ODIs - was placed alongside Umar Akmal, Umar Gul and Ahmed Shehzad in category B.

It was reported that Younis was upset and refused to sign the contract. PCB chairman Najam Sethi looked to "rectify the situation".

"According to the new clause to be inserted into the rules, any player who has played over 300 matches across the three formats of the game, and has captained in all three formats will be placed in category A," Sethi was quoted as saying in a PCB release. "The committee comprising Zakir Khan, Moin Khan and Mohammad Akram did a good job in framing the rules [for giving out contracts], but it did not sufficiently address all issues, especially fitness and past performance, whereby a class player like Younis Khan was a fitting candidate for category A."

According to the earlier policy, those who play all the three formats were considered for the top category. However, whether the policy was being strictly implemented was questionable, as category A player Shahid Afridi had retired from Tests in 2010 and has been playing only limited-overs cricket. Even Mohammad Hafeez, who was dropped from the Test side last year was given the top category.

Younis, 36, a regular in the Test team, is eying the 2015 World Cup, though he last played an ODI in March 2013. He retired from T20 cricket after leading the side to victory in the World T20 in 2009.

That's gud revision, he deserve to get A category. And PCB must utilize his experience in WC, for Irfan & Fawad Alam they should get at least C category..............PCB is just wasting Fawad Alam & Umar Amin, they must get a permanent slot in Test & ODI. My team Shehzad,Hafeez,Younus/Fawad,Sohaib,Umar Akmal,Misbah,Afridi,Bhatti/Wahab Riaz,Gul,Ajmal,Irfan

@ Ahsan Nauman Khan: Contracts should be given according to future requirements? Just think Pakistan playing in England or Australia without Younus Khan. What will be the score? 90 All out? or 50 All Out? Last three test in South Africa. Only two centurions from Pakistan side (one was Younus). No one from so called A Catagory.

Finally PCB makes a right decision. Hopefully this will continue. For me Younis Khan should also be in ODI side and should play in all one day internationals before the World Cup and of course during the world cup.

I think it's a fair decision. It's comparable to an employee negotiating the contract with his employer which we all do in this day and age. I think Younis's importance in the team extends to more than just his class batting. He is a team player, thorough professional and I think is a candidate for the test captain position after Misbah to fill the gap till we identify a long term leader.

Will there be a day when Pakistan cricket sticks to its decisions?? I dont think it ever happens in another country that a player gets upset with degrading in contract. It must have given him extra push to perform n get back the contract. Virender Sehwag Zaheer khan and Harbhajan have all lost contracts but never have done cry baby like acts Pakistan cricketers do. All pakistan cricketers now a days are good at only complaining..

Younis was never ODI material....Player power still prevails in PCB

  • khankhawari on June 12, 2014, 7:07 GMT

Only saeed ajmal and Junaid khan play in all formats

  • on June 12, 2014, 5:56 GMT

pcb should have stuck to their decision of giving younis a B and junaid khan should have been given a B rather than A and people who just critcize afridi must know that afridi himself said he will not mind if he is given a B or C category , Contracts should be given according to performance and future requirement of player Thats it !

  • on June 12, 2014, 0:03 GMT

Good step!! A player like younus is a blessing and he deserves a chance in ODIs....whereas junaid is not much experienced and his inclusion in A category is a poor step taken which can destroy his career...

Pakistan just loves Afridi. The man performs once in a while and the whole country goes ballastics. He was a dangerous batsman, once upon a time. Not any more. The PCB has to wake up to this fact and treat others with some respect. This is no way to groom new talent.

Thanks God the common sense prevailed. I don't know why PCB always creates an unnecessary controversy, only to reverse it. Yunus deserves to play ODIs ahead of Hafeez.

  • on June 11, 2014, 20:26 GMT

    Hafeez in category D :D:D

  • on June 11, 2014, 20:24 GMT

good decision but it has made it more confusing. the rule should be how many days one can give to his employer. with this new clause they made it more confusing. for some they followed this and for some they followed different. earlier they said that player playing in all formats will be in A then why afridi and hafeez in as hafeez was dropped. and players who are very regular in team like maqsood, bhatti, anwar, sarfraz, irfan etc were left in D and players like adnan and khurram were in C. umar amin in D. lot of questions on these contracts.

with this new rule performance doesnt matter if they had played 300 games. hafeez and afridi will always be in A even if they are not in tests.

  • Desihungama on June 11, 2014, 17:47 GMT

You know it doesn't have to be this way that you play in all 3 formats to be placed in A category. Simply, good enough in Test should warrant A category contract. That tells you priorities of PCB. Placing a T20WC winning captain will only sow disenchantment.

It was a just decision to categorize Younus Khan in A cat, as he has done so well in past, and proved himself as among the leading batsmen in the world. We hope to see him play and perform in world cup 2015 along with the younger lot who are less dependable than him, most of them are careless and needs to be trained, how to play the game as per the required situation.

Younas Khan is needed in world cup next year.

  • on June 11, 2014, 15:47 GMT

If this is the case,sehwag/zaheer should be given A categorycin INDIAN team..but there are out of team as they are not fit and consistent..same should be applicable for Younis for the growth of pakisthan cricket..then he will realise and come back strongly..

Younis khan is best batsman for test and odis.

  • on June 11, 2014, 15:38 GMT

Totally agreed with Rana ! and those performance either came against India or lesser teams !

  • on June 11, 2014, 15:32 GMT

A very nice step taken by PCB regarding Younis khan's rise in Category. I think he should be playing ODI's alongside Tests since he is one of the reliable and most experienced batsman in the side. Rising in Category will definitely motivate him whereas in Category B he must have felt ignored.

  • RANA1610 on June 11, 2014, 15:16 GMT

According to the performances of Hafeez from last 3 years, he should be stepped down. In the very few matches he did well but 90% matches were in between 0 to 20 runs.
