Allrounder Ryan McLaren has been called in as a replacement for Wayne Parnell in South Africa's Twenty20 squad that will play New Zealand in a three-match series starting December 21. Parnell has suffered a wrist injury that has ruled him out for two weeks.
McLaren will have the chance to play his first Twenty20 international since October 2010. He has had a productive domestic season so far, taking 15 wickets in six games at an average of 15.06, and scoring 179 runs at 44.75 in the recently concluded Momentum one-day competition. In his only first-class game this season, he took six wickets.
He was also called up as a reserve during South Africa's Test series against Australia, for the injured Jacques Kallis.
A bowling allrounder, Parnell has had his share of injury woes before. In 2010, he had picked up a groin injury that stalled his international career and gave him little game-time, something he gained in the IPL next year. He has not had the most fruitful of careers since then - in the 14 limited-overs internationals he has played since, he has taken only seven wickets and scored 121 runs at 24.20.

Posted by TommytuckerSaffa on (December 18, 2012, 10:20 GMT)SA1987 Lets rather say it how it is. I want really good players playing for my country. If we can't get really good players then get young/youth players in so they can raise their game. But let's rather not get in has beens who are 31 yrs old and have had their chances and are just not good enough.
Posted by C.A-SA1987 on (December 17, 2012, 19:17 GMT)Guys, why are we so quick to judge our players? McLaren is not Kallis, noone is (not even Sir Garry). So comparing the two is a pointless exercise.
McLaren is good, not great. I am not his biggest fan at all. I agree that his selection has a feel of going back to what we already know, but then if that is the case, we should look at the selectors.
It's not Ryan's fault that he was selected, so slagging him off is a bit unfair.
Posted by GlobalCricketLover on (December 17, 2012, 17:20 GMT)really? they couldn't find anything better? very disappointing...
Posted by TommytuckerSaffa on (December 17, 2012, 11:53 GMT)Calm chaps morris is in already. McLaren is useless and should never be in a green and gold jumper again. Unlike my Ozzie friends I'm not afraid to critize players if they are rubbish.
Posted by Robster1 on (December 17, 2012, 5:00 GMT)Errr...Chris Morris is already in the squad though David Wiese must be the next selection as an all rounder in the shorter form of the game.
Posted by THE_MIZ on (December 16, 2012, 19:22 GMT)@Surly Cynic couldn't agree more McLaren/Tim Bresnan would not make it in most international teams. Morris non-selection is equally baffling. The only foreseeable concern is the spin department. Peterson and Phangiso are decent enough to deal with NZ but Pakistan could lay into them when they arrive. It seems by dropping Tahir who, admittedly, had a shocker of a test we are retreating into picking defensive spinners again. Effectively we are moving back to the times where we struggled to bowl out teams on the 5th day of a test. Why drop Harris then in the first place?
Posted byParnell lost his charm in bowling after the grion injury. Will he lose his batting skills after this wrist injury, or return with a bang? Lets see
Posted by axe_hay on (December 16, 2012, 18:09 GMT)David Wiese should have been called instead of McClaren !
Posted by cricfan17 on (December 16, 2012, 17:32 GMT)Wasn't Morris supposed to make his debut? Why do the SA selectors keep choosing these tried-but-failed players? Give us Morris or David Wiese.
