South Africa U19 297 and 228 for 6 beat England U19 327 and 197 by four wickets
As if victory in the Lord's Test was not enough, South Africa completed a memorable double when their Under-19 team beat their English countermarks by four wickets at Headingley.
South Africa had been off the pace for much of the match. After winning the toss and bowling first, they allowed England to make a healthy 327 in their first innings, thanks to the efforts of Joe Sayers (60), Samit Patel (61) and Liam Plunkett. Although Imraan Khan's 61 steered South Africa to 297 in their reply, it wasn't until Vernon Philander took 5 for 50 in the second innings that England were in danger of defeat.
Philander, who had taken three wickets in the first innings, helped to bowl England out for 197, which left South Africa needing 228 for victory. They were under some early pressure, but Rieel de Kock and AB de Villiers both hit fifties, while Tim Bresnan, the Yorkshire bowler who took 5 for 81 in the first innings, could only manage one wicket.
Morgan Pillay, South Africa's coach, was jubilant. "We were under pressure to perform as they made a good start. But the boys showed a true South African fighting spirit to come back and win."
