18 The number of instances of bowlers taking nine or more wickets in a Test innings. Rangana Herath became the latest to join the group, with his innings haul of 9 for 127. Two bowlers - Jim Laker and Muttiah Muralitharan - have achieved the feat twice, making Herath the 16th bowler to join this club.

1 The number of left-arm bowlers who have taken nine wickets in a Test innings. Unlike in batting, where four of the top five scores are by left-handers, the top 17 bowling figures are all by right-arm bowlers. Before Herath, ten times left-arm bowlers had taken eight in an innings, with the best being 8 for 11, by England's Johnny Briggs against South Africa in 1889.

3.82 Herath's economy rate, which is the highest for any bowler who has taken nine wickets in an innings; the previous-highest was 3.45, by Devon Malcolm when he took 9 for 57 off 16.3 overs against South Africa in 1994. The 127 runs Herath conceded are also the highest for any bowler when taking nine in an innings.

6545 The aggregate partnership runs between Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara in Tests, which is second only to Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar's 6920 runs. During the course of this partnership, they went past Greenidge-Haynes (6482 runs in 148 innings). The Sangakkara-Jayawardene pair averages 56.91 runs per partnership, compared to 50.51 for Dravid-Tendulkar. The current partnership is already worth 98; two more runs will make it their 19th century stand, which is one short of the record of 20, between Dravid and Tendulkar.

33 The number of times both Sangakkara and Jayawardene have passed 50 in the same innings in Tests. Jayawardene needs one more run to make this the 34th instance. Dravid and Tendulkar hold this record too, with 39 instances of 50-plus scores for both batsmen.

4 The number of batsmen who have scored more Test runs than Sangakkara, who went past Brian Lara's aggregate of 11,953 runs during the course of his unbeaten 54. Sangakkara has played 221 innings to score these runs, compared to Lara's 232. Only Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Jacques Kallis and Dravid have scored more Test runs.
