Pakistan's limited-overs captain Shahid Afridi says he has accepted an offer to lead one of the provinces in the inaugural edition of the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) later this year.

"It's a good opportunity and I will try to make the most of it," Afridi, 31, told Pakistani daily the News. "There is a comfortable window for us [Pakistan's cricketers] to feature in the league in Sri Lanka. We have a sufficient break from international cricket this summer."

The SLPL comes as a shot in the arm for Pakistan's cricketers who have been ignored by the lucrative IPL since the inaugural edition in 2008. Afridi said that he has signed a three-year contract, worth US$35,000 for the first season of the SLPL, with the amount doubling in 2012. He is expected to be joined in the tournament by Pakistan team-mates Misbah-ul-Haq, Shoaib Akhtar, Abdul Razzaq, Umar Gul and Umar Akmal.

The SLPL will be a seven-team inter-provincial tournament played over approximately 18 days in July-August. The teams will play each other once, with the top four teams qualifying for the semi-finals. All the games will be played at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo and the winner of the tournament will qualify for the Champions League Twenty20.

Among the other international players who will be taking part are Kieron Pollard, Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, Daniel Vettori, Daniel Christian, Herschelle Gibbs and Kevin O'Brien.

Its funny to me that most of the Indians talking Sri Lanka down here and making fun of their own league, the fact is IPL is not abt cricket anyway its just a business to BCCI. So what is this hypocrisy that only India can do something but not anyone else?...The only reason BCCI is rich is because India have over a billion people so international businesses obviously gonna invest more in India as the revenue generation is more cos of the high population not because India is a rich nation, in fact a very poor country. I thought Indians should be happy to see a neighbor making some money too but all I see is jealousy and hypocrisy, which is sad

@faizalsehwag: SLPL is not IPL. IPL is a looooong Bollywood commercial with some cricket peppered in. It's basic goal is for the sponsors and team owners to make money.... not promote cricket. Nothing wrong with making money but let's just state the facts. No one can predict the success of SLPL but because it has a small footprint i.e. 35000 salaray vs 500000, it has less overhead hence it does not need to make lots of money to survive. It does not need BCCI/India to survive either. It will have good fan base in SL/Pak and Ban and maybe non Asian countries if more players participate. I have a sneeky suspicion that BCCI/IPL may sabotage it just like they did with ICL. That's the only threat to it's success.

take indian players also

Oh Yeah, right India! All the other countries are holding their county cricket matches and domestic tournament with BCCI and Indian players? Right, right. One, this is not IPL. Two, not a media event to earn money. Three, not a place for players to earn money. Four, this is just a domestic tournament like any other country are having inside their countries. I guess you guys are afraid to see it's success. Who said SLCB is the one who's going to pay for the players? It's a non-Sri Lankan company named SEV who's paying for this tournament. So, if it's unsuccessful, don't worry it won't be SLC's loss it will be SEV's loss. We always had a domestic tournament with only Sri Lankans. The question is about other international cricketers, right? I guess you guys are afraid with even a price of $35,000, some high-profiled cricketers have already signed up for the first season of this tournament. If Sri Lanka can't do it for the standards of cricket, none other can. This is all about standards.
