It was the 1519th Test match in cricket history. It was South Africa's 247th and New Zealand's 283rd Test match. It was the 26th match between these two sides. The record now reads: South Africa 15, New Zealand 3 and drawn 8. It was the 138th match on South African soil - 15th between these two sides. Umpires Rudi Koertzen and Ian Robinson officiated in their 20th and 24th match respectively. Matthew Sinclair's 150 in first innings is a record score by a New Zealand batsman in Tests against South Africa. The previous highest was 142 by John Reid at Johannesburg in 1961-62. Sinclair also became the first New Zealander to score a hundred in nine Tests against South Africa since its re-admission into Test cricket in 1992. Infact the last time a Kiwi batsman scored hundred against South Africa was way back in 1963-64 when Barry Sinclair made 138 at Auckland in 1963-64. Incidentally the two Sinclairs are unrelated. Sinclair's contribution was 50.33 % in New Zealand's first innings total. He became only the fifth batsman to contribute 50 % or more in a completed innings for New Zealand on foreign soil after Mark Burgess - 59.50 % (119*/ 200 v Pakistan at Dhaka in 1969-70), Glenn Turner - 57.77 % (223* / 386 v West Indies at Kingston in 1971-72) and 57.04 % (81 / 142 v England at Leeds in 1973), John Reid - 57.03 % (142/ 249 v South Africa at Wanderers in 1961-62) and John Wright - 50.00 % (62 / 124 v India at Hyderabad in 1988-89). The catch of Gary Kirsten in first innings was 150th for Adam Parore behind the wicket in his 54th Test. He became the second New Zealander after Ian Smith and 15th keeper to do so. Parore, by taking four catches in South Africa's first innings, equalled the existing record of most dismissals by a New Zealand keeper in an innings against South Africa. Art Dick had taken four catches on three occasions - all during the 1961-62 series - in first, fourth and fifth Test. Parore, himself, had made four dismissals in the first innings of Auckland Test in 1994-95. The eighth wicket partnership of 136 runs in first innings between Neil McKenzie and Nicky Boje is South Africa's best for this wicket against New Zealand in all matches. The pair obliterated the previous best of 95 between Jack Cheetham and Hugh Tayfield at Cape Town in 1953-54. Infact the partnership is the third best for South Africa for eighth wicket against all countries. The dismissal of Craig McMillan in second innings provided Shaun Pollock the 36th instance of getting a batsman out on duck. With this he equalled Allan Donald's record tally for South Africa. Interestingly Pollock has played only 47 Tests against Donald's 64. Just for the record, Pakistan's Wasim Akram holds the record of dismissing batsmen on duck on most occasions - 78 in 100. Stephen Fleming was captaining New Zealand for the 31st time in a Test, which takes him past Geoff Howarth's tally. Now only John Reid (34) has played in more matches as captain for New Zealand. South Africa has now played 40 matches at home soil since its readmission in to international cricket in 1991-92 winning 22, drawing 12 and losing only six. The victory in this Test sealed the series in South Africa's favour. South Africa has now won 10 series out of 13 it has played at home since returning to international cricket, drawn two and lost only one (to Australia in 1996-97).
