England have added Sam Curran and Craig Overton to their squad for the final two games of the Royal London Series against Australia.
With England already having taken an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, they will consider resting some of their seamers - notably Mark Wood, Liam Plunkett and David Willey - for the final two matches. With such a short turnaround between games - the match in Nottinghamshire finished late on Tuesday evening; the match in Durham starts on Thursday lunchtime - there is some nervousness within the England camp about making unnecessary demands of the faster bowlers. The final match of the series takes place in Manchester on Sunday.
No firm decision on the make-up of the team is likely to be made until Thursday morning, but Eoin Morgan, the England captain, indicated after the match on Tuesday that England were inclined to pick the same batting line-up. There will also be a temptation to pick Tom Curran, who is highly valued as a death bowler, and it is possible that both Currans will represent England in the coming days. If they do so, they will be the first brothers to represent England at the same time since the Hollioakes did so in 1999.
While that could mean Wood missing out on an international appearance on his home ground in Durham - something he has achieved only once, against New Zealand in 2015 - England's priority will be the long-term fitness of a bowler who exceeded 91 mph at times in Nottingham.
With Curran and Overton no longer available, Chris Jordan has also been added to the England Lions squad for the matches in Derby on June 22 and 23 against India A and West Indies A respectively. Overton will return to Lions duty after the ODI series is over.
England have never whitewashed Australia in a five-match ODI series, though in 2012 they won 4-0 with one game lost to poor weather.
Amended Lions squad: Nick Gubbins (Middlesex), Tom Kohler-Cadmore (Yorkshire), Sam Hain (Warwickshire), Liam Livingstone (Lancashire), Steven Mullaney (Nottinghamshire, captain), Ben Foakes (Surrey, wk), Liam Dawson (Hampshire), Matthew Parkinson (Lancashire), Matthew Fisher (Yorkshire), Reece Topley (Hampshire), Tom Helm (Middlesex), Chris Jordan (Sussex). *Craig Overton (Somerset) to replace Jordan after the first two matches of the series.
