The Dhaka police have registered a case under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act against Bangladesh cricketer Shahadat Hossain and his wife on charges of assaulting their housemaid. A Dhaka court, while accepting the case, on Monday directed the police to submit its report on the charges on October 12.
Shahadat had, on Sunday afternoon, filed a complaint with Mirpur police saying that the couple's housemaid had gone missing. He has been untraceable through Monday and has not been reachable on his phone.
The victim, aged 11, had been found on Sunday night by a local journalist, Khandakar Mozzamel Haque, who took her to the Mirpur police station, under whose jurisdiction the alleged abuse took place. A case was filed there and the victim was sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, the BCB has expressed embarrassment at the incident, saying it was not expected of a senior cricketer like Shahadat. "We still don't know the full incident. But from what we have seen in the media, it is unwanted," said BCB CEO Nizam Uddin Chowdhury. "We didn't expect this from a senior cricketer like him. We are embarrassed."
