Australia in Sri Lanka, 2011-12

Wisden's review of the fifth ODI, Sri Lanka v Australia in Sri Lanka, 2011-12

15-Apr-2012
At Colombo (RPS), August 22, 2011 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by four wickets. Toss: Sri Lanka.
Lasith Malinga, who became the first player to take three one-day international hat-tricks, set up Sri Lanka's consolation victory. With the second, third and fourth balls of his eighth over, he yorked Johnson, trapped Hastings with a low full toss - a decision the batsman unsuccessfully reviewed - then speared another yorker into Doherty's middle stump. Malinga had taken four wickets in four balls against South Africa during the 2007 World Cup, and three in three against Kenya in the 2011 edition, and now moved clear of Wasim Akram, Saqlain Mushtaq and Chaminda Vaas, who all claimed two one-day hat-tricks. With Ajantha Mendis removing David Hussey and Haddin in the overs before and after Malinga's feat, Australia lost their last five wickets for one run in 11 balls to slip to a below-par 211. But Johnson dismissed Tharanga with the fourth delivery of the reply, before two wickets for James Pattinson, in his second one-day international, made it 33 for three. Silva and Jayawardene then added 111, which broke the back of the chase and, arguably, prolonged the international career of Silva, whose previous five innings had brought just 29 runs.
Man of the Match: S. L. Malinga. Man of the Series: M. J. Clarke.
