†AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND 1982-83

At Melbourne, January 23

15-Apr-1984
At Melbourne, January 23. Australia won by five wickets. The attendance record for one-day cricket, set up at the corresponding match a year earlier when Australia were playing West Indies, was beaten, 84,153 seeing Australia win a game reduced by morning rain to 37 overs a side. Put in in overcast weather, England made only modest progress until Lamb and Randall, coming together at 66 for three, added 139 in 23 overs. Lamb's 94 was a magnificent exhibition of aggressive, all-round strokeplay. Australia were without Thomson (bronchitis) and Lawson (groin strain). Just over two months since having a knee operation Lillee returned to their attack, which was completed by Maguire, who had been taken out of a Sheffield Shield match in Brisbane to make his first representative appearance for Australia. Border, promoted to open with Dyson, got Australia off to a flying start. From 41 for no wicket after four overs, they always had something in hand.
Man of the Match: A. J. Lamb. Attendance: 84,153.
