†AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND 1989-90

At Hyderabad, October 19

15-Apr-1991
At Hyderabad, October 19. England won by seven wickets. Toss: Australia. Border's stunning 84 off only 44 balls, and Larkins's century off 126 balls, made memorable what could have been a routine encounter. England's bowlers, having removed Boon in the first over, restricted Marsh and Jones to 108 in 34 overs, but Taylor and Border added 120 in the final twelve overs. The Australian captain struck Small for three successive sixes in an over costing 21 runs; in the next over, again worth 21, he hit Fraser for a six and three fours off consecutive balls. In all, he hit five sixes and eight fours. Larkins's reply, while less savage, was equally commanding, his strokeplay both powerful and subtle. His previous highest in a one-day international was 34 in 1979-80: now he dominated an opening stand of 185 with Gooch, hit two sixes and nineteen fours in his 124, and justified his recall to the England team after an absence of eight years.
Man of the Match: W. Larkins.
