Australia v New Zealand

At Sydney, January 5, 6, 7, 9, 10. Drawn. New Zealand were cruelly deprived of their first victory against Australia by the loss of two day's play due to rain.

Australia won the toss but injuries to Walker, Gilmour and Walters on the first day of the game hindered I.M. Chappell.

Parker square drove aggressively for his maiden Test century. He received splendid support from Wadsworth and Coney, the young Wellington reinforcement appearing in his first Test for the injured G.M. Tuner.

The New Zealand pace bowlers used the wicket cleverly, Andrews dismissing Sheahan and G.S. Chappell in his third over with his medium-paced in-swingers after R.J. Hadlee had dismissed Stackpole caught from an outswinger. Coney's fielding at second slip was important, for he took three successive catches in the position after the team's difficulties in judging the pace and height of catches behind the wicket throughout the tour.

The Hadlees, Andrews and Congdon all enjoyed success, R.J. Hadlee finishing with the most impressive figures of four for 33.

Morrison, appearing in only his second Test, and as opener for Turner, made a valuable second innings century and Hastings cut and drove in punishing fashion for his 83. Walker's groin injury was so severe that he did not bowl in the second innings and G.S. Chappell took the new ball with Gilmour, each finishing with three wickets.

R.J. Hadlee seamed the ball disconcertingly to take Stackpole's wicket cheaply again and with one day remaining, Australia were two for 30 and still 425 runs behind. Rain prevented a ball from being bowled on the last day.
