AUSTRALIA v PAKISTAN

Toss: Pakistan

15-Apr-1998
Toss: Pakistan. International debut: Mujahid Jamshed.
Australia's lamentable one-day form stretched to ten losses in 12 matches, and the headlines were devoted to Taylor's confession that he considered pulling out to find his form in the Sheffield Shield before the Tests resumed. Pakistan did a lot wrong and still won. They batted first on a seaming wicket and lost their top three for ducks, they included two spinners in conditions perfect for pace, and conceded 28 sundries when runs were like gold bars. A substandard, spiteful Bellerive Oval pitch demanded scrapping, unattractive cricket. Cool-headed youngster Mohammad Wasim played straight to conquer its variable bounce but few followed his lead. Set just 150, Australia batted timidly. Having rested three strike bowlers, Pakistan had to hunt for options: debutant Mujahid Jamshed put up his hand, despite not having bowled in a couple of seasons, and took one for six in four overs - enhancing Pakistan's reputation for hauling in talent from unexpected quarters.
Man of the Match: Mohammad Wasim. Attendance: 11,542.
