Australia v Pakistan 1999-2000

At Sydney, January 19 (day/night)

15-Apr-2001
At Sydney, January 19 (day/night). Australia won by 81 runs. Toss: Australia.
On dismissing Martyn, Wasim Akram became the first bowler to take 400 one-day international wickets: no one else had yet taken 300, but then only Mohammad Azharuddin had played more games than Wasim's 285. Later, however, the spotlight fell on a bowler playing his first one-day international. Leg-spinner MacGill's return of four for 19 was the second-best by an Australian on one-day debut after Tony Dodemaide's five for 21 against Sri Lanka in 1987-88. With 29 coming from McGrath's first two overs, and Abdur Razzaq cracking five consecutive fours from his fifth, the Pakistanis had raced to 100 inside 13 overs. MacGill put a stop to the mayhem with his sixth ball; the next 50 took almost 20 overs and cost six wickets. Batting first on a hot, sticky afternoon, Australia had called all the shots after Wasim's double strike in the ninth over. Mark Waugh became the first Australian to reach 7,000 one-day international runs, and with Bevan added 90 in 16 overs. Symonds, hitting 47 in 26 balls, and Shane Lee (26 in 13) supplied the fireworks as the final ten overs realised 101.
Man of the Match: S. C. G. MacGill. Attendance: 38,006.
