Australia recorded the expected victory, but it was a sluggish performance: Steve Waugh called his team's fielding atrocious. Three chances went down - and the bowling was almost as uninspired. Salmond twice skipped down the pitch to McGrath during his perky 31. The first ball of Scotland's first official international was crashed through the covers for four by Patterson, an Ayr estate agent, but they managed only one more run before the end of the fifth over, struggling under overcast skies. Late impetus came from Hamilton, the Yorkshire all-rounder born near Edinburgh, who unfurled some booming cover drives.

Australia used up all but five overs of their innings to win. Gilchrist perished early, snaffled at leg slip off Asim Butt, the Lahore-born seamer, but they passed 100 without further loss. Then Ponting was wonderfully caught by Allingham, running full tilt and diving at mid-wicket, and Lehmann dragged one on from off-spinner Dyer. Mark Waugh scored the game's only fifty, and his brother Steve struck seven fours to see them past their modest target. Steve was jostled by pitch invaders as he left the field, a less alarming experience than the rioting he had recently survived in the Caribbean, but enough for him to demand better security. The atmosphere - boozy but cheery - was typified by a spectator wearing an Australian team shirt and a kilt.
