†AUSTRALIA v WEST INDIES 1988-89

At Melbourne, January 14 (day/night)

15-Apr-1990
At Melbourne, January 14 (day/night). Australia won by 2 runs. Toss: Australia. A match of many fluctuations ended with Walsh needing to hit the last ball, bowled by Hughes, for four. He managed only a single, a hard cover drive going straight to Border on the edge of the circle. Having chosen to bat, Australia lost three cheap wickets before Border and Jones rallied them, Border playing his first innings of any consequence against this West Indian side. He received 104 balls while making 78, pulling Richards for one very long six. A target of 205 looked reasonable enough for West Indies until they, too, lost early wickets. They were 41 for four by the time Alderman and Hughes finished their opening spells, and seemingly on the point of defeat at 148 for eight. The two fast bowlers, Ambrose and Bishop, then began to bat as though they could win the match. They had added 48 when O'Donnell bowled Ambrose, leaving Bishop and Walsh to find 9 from the last over. Given run out when the stumps looked to have been unfairly broken by Healy, Australia's wicket-keeper, Marshall showed sufficient dissent for Clive Lloyd, manager of West Indies, to announce next day that his most famous bowler had been rebuked.
