Every game is now an important one for Surrey, and Jonathan Batty, one of their smaller stars, gave them the big performance they needed to stay on top of the Lancashire bowling. Batty batted throughout the day and scored a patient 152 not out with 24 fours and a six as he guided Surrey to 330 for 9. Batty added 104 with Graham Thorpe (57), and then 113 with Azhar Mahmood (63). But apart from those two big partnerships, Surrey struggled to get away from the accurate Lancashire attack. Rikki Clarke (11), Alistair Brown (1) and Adam Hollioake (0) all failed as Gary Keedy (3 for 62), Peter Martin (2 for 49) and John Wood (2 for 62) kept things tight. Even Chris Schofield, whose bowling has been a touch erratic of late, only went for 18 from 10. Bad light then ended play early with Batty 16 short of his career-best score.

Keegan took 3 for 76, and Simon Cook, Ben Hutton and Ed Weekes also chipped in with two each as Warwickshire lost wickets at regular intervals. Mike Powell (73) and Mark Wagh (62) got them off to a solid start by adding 96 after Nick Knight was the first of Keegan's victims for only 10. But after they both perished, Jim Troughton was bowled by Cook for a three-ball duck, and Warwickshire had faltered to 156 for 4. Dougie Brown then came to the rescue to give the innings some oomph with an energetic 71, including 10 fours. In Middlesex's reply, Waqar Younis bowled Andy Strauss first ball and then trapped Ben Hutton lbw for 5 to leave Middlesex swaying on 24 for 2. But Robin Weston (29*) and Owais Shah (36*) restored their advantage as they closed on 78 for 2.

Alex Wharf finished on 79 and Mike Kasprowicz 51 as they put on 137 for the eighth wicket. Wood and Stephen Fleming (61) then made up for lost time with a century opening stand, and Anthony McGrath, England's forgotten man, carried on Yorkshire's progress with a well-paced 92, including 12 fours and a six. McGrath had boosted the score to 259 for 2 when he was caught off Dean Cosker, but Glamorgan hit back late in the day with the wickets of Michael Lumb and Yuvraj Singh as Yorkshire closed 175 runs adrift.

Kenway was finally caught off Richard Johnson, who took 3 for 67 in his second match after his injury, and Crawley was also caught, off Nixon McLean, who finished with 2 for 53. Nic Pothas (21), Lawrence Prittipaul (39) and James Hamblin (31) then made contributions down the order as honours ended just about even.

Chasing 268, de Villiers led the way at the top of the order and kept a cool head while South Africa spluttered to 52 for 4. He and Imraan Khan (46) then put on a rescuing stand of 117 and Heinrich le Roux (12) and Craig Thyssen (19) provided de Villiers valuable company down the order. When de Villiers was eventually out, caught off Liam Plunkett (3 for 58), South Africa needed seven more to win with three wickets left. They soon lost two of those three, but Aaron Phangiso kept his cool to hit the winning runs. de Villiers's innings also overshadowed Samit Patel's quickfire 122 from 112 balls, including 16 fours and a six, which was the cornerstone of England's competitive total.
