Baugh century rescues Jamaica

Half-centuries from Kirk Edwards and Patrick Browne helped Barbados avoid being bowled out for under 100 runs on day one of their match against the Windward Islands at the Kensington Oval. The rest of the line-up contributed 41 to the total.

A venue that produced over 1600 runs in the Test between West Indies and England earlier this week saw 13 wickets fall in a day as Deighton Butler and Shane Shillingford took six wickets to bowl out Barbados for 192 and then Tino Best picked up two to reduce Windwards to 64 for 3 by stumps. Edwards' 64 was his third half-century in six first-class games. While Butler dismissed three top-order batsmen to set up the collapse, it was Shillingford who removed Edwards and Browne. At stumps Andre Fletcher was batting at 24 for Windwards.

In Albion, Combined Campuses and Colleges managed just slightly better than Barbados as Guyana offspinner Veeraswamy Permaul took 4 for 72 to bowl them out for 254. Floyd Reifer (72) and Jamal Smith (56) added 126 together before Permaul broke their stand by having Reifer caught behind. This triggered a collapse and the last six wickets fell for 40 runs. At stumps Guyana trailed by 230 runs with eight wickets in hands.

Despite Carlton Baugh's 129, Jamaica managed only 275 in their first innings at the Trelawny Stadium as left-arm spinners Magnum Nanan and Imran Khan picked up three wickets each for Trinidad & Tobago. Baugh, who returned to his first-class cricket after nearly a year, rescued Jamaica, who at one stage collapsed to 168 for 8. He hit nine fours and nine sixes in his 160-ball innings and added 95 crucial runs with No. 9 Andrew Richardson (10). At stumps T&T trailed by 257 runs with 10 wickets in hand.
