Darren Berry, the Victoria assistant coach, was suspended from match-day coaching until January 20 after being found guilty of showing dissent and attempting to intimidate an umpire. He faced four charges after entering the room of Norm McNamara, the TV official, to challenge his run-out decision of David Hussey in Victoria's FR Cup match with Queensland on Friday.
A two-hour hearing after the game was adjourned until Tuesday night, when the Cricket Australia conducts commissioner Kevin Kelso ruled Berry would be limited to coaching the side on non-match days. Berry had pleaded guilty on Friday to two charges of using obscene language and acting against the spirit of the game.
Kelso made no finding on those transgressions, but ruled Berry had shown serious dissent at an umpire's decision and intimidated or attempted to intimidate the umpire. Berry's ban includes two Pura Cup games, the first-class match against India and the domestic Twenty20 competition. Berry, who has ten days to appeal the decision, can return for the Pura Cup contest against South Australia on January 21.
