Andrew Caddick and Charl Willoughby tore through Northamptonshire's middle-order on the first day against Somerset at Taunton, after Chris Rogers struck an excellent hundred at the top of the order. Rogers and his opening partner, Stephen Peters, were seemingly cruising at 153 for 1 before Ian Blackwell bowled Peters for 63. Rogers found good support in Usman Afzaal and brought up a 149-ball hundred. But he too fell to Blackwell before Willoughby and Caddick rocked Northamptonshire, sending them reeling from 260 for 2 to 326 all out. Four batsman registered ducks, including the dangerous Lance Klusener, leaving Afzaal on a lonely and unbeaten 49. However, Northamptonshire hit back with the ball and removed both Somerset openers, to leave the home side trailing by 297 runs.
