Commonwealth Bank Series, 2011-12

Wisden's review of the seventh match, Australia v India, Commonwealth Bank Series, 2011-12

Jesse Hogan
15-Apr-2013
At Brisbane, February 19, 2012 (day/night). Australia won by 110 runs. Australia 5pts. Toss: Australia.
The game will be remembered as Ponting's 375th and final one-day international. He played it as Australia's acting-captain, but an innings of seven in 26 balls - ended by an anticlimactic paddle to deep square leg - took his series tally to 18 runs in five matches. The following day, he was axed from the squad; the day after that, he announced he did not expect to play one-day international cricket again. His career aggregate of 13,704 runs was second only to Tendulkar.
Australia, though, were able to complete an ultimately simple victory, despite looking set for a modest score at 169 for three after 38 overs. But David Hussey and Christian put on 65 in the final six, then Hilfenhaus - in his first one-day international since November 2009 - continued his career-reviving season with one-day- best figures. To compound India's dudgeon, Dhoni was later banned for a match after presiding over a slow over-rate, itself a partial consequence of his bizarre decision not to use the spin of Jadeja.
Man of the Match: B. W. Hilfenhaus.
Attendance: 32,063.
