Commonwealth Bank Series, 2011-12

Wisden's review of the third final match, Australia v Sri Lanka, Commonwealth Bank Series, 2011-12

15-Apr-2013
At Adelaide, March 8, 2012 (day/night). Australia won by 16 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka. One-day international debut: N. M. Lyon.
Australia handed a one-day debut to Nathan Lyon, playing a second spinner alongside Doherty in an attempt to take advantage of the same pitch used two days earlier, but it was seamers McKay and Lee who inspired them to a tournament-clinching victory. First they added 40 for the eighth wicket to dig their side out of trouble, then combined to take eight wickets and expose what Australian coach Mickey Arthur had described before the game as Sri Lanka's "softer underbelly" - a jibe aimed at the batting below the big three.
Tharanga alone threatened to make him eat his words, reducing the target to a run a ball from the last five overs. But a dogged 122-ball innings was ended by Watson's belated decision to return to the attack after an excellent start; McKay knocked over the last two to claim career-best figures. Earlier, Australia's promising beginning - 112 for one after 20 overs - descended into mediocrity when they lost five for 36, only for Lee and McKay to carry out the first stage of their two-part rescue act.
