The crucial Pura Cup match between Victoria and Tasmania ended in a disappointing draw when play was abandoned because of poor light. Victoria were 6 for 212 and needed another 100 runs from 10 overs when officials called off play at about 6.30pm. Jonathon Moss was unbeaten on 77 at stumps, with Andrew McDonald on 8. The draw, coupled with Queensland's triumph against New South Wales at Sydney, meant that Tasmania were denied a place in the finals.
A shaky 4 for 83 at tea, Victoria's first casualty of the final session was Cameron White, who was dismissed by Xavier Doherty, the left-arm spinner, for 23. The sixth-wicket stand of Moss and Brendan Joseland added 73 before Joseland was caught behind off Dan Marsh for 51, made from 50 balls with seven fours.
It was Marsh's second victim of the day: he had earlier trapped David Hussey in front for 3. Andrew Downton, the left-arm fast bowler, also took a couple of wickets, dismissing Brad Hodge (7) with the opening ball of his first over and adding the coveted scalp of Matthew Elliott for 34.
Earlier, Tasmania had declared at 9 for 222 after lunch, with a minimum 65 overs remaining. Shane Watson was the star, posting his fourth hundred of the season, which came off 100 balls with 13 fours. He slapped two sixes en route to his 117 before being caught by Matthew Mott off Moss, who finished the innings with 4 for 60 off 14 overs. Watson was declared Man of the Match.
