Easterns and Western Province head the table

After two exciting Standard Bank Cup matches on Sunday, which both went down to the final few balls, left Western Province and Easterns unbeaten and firmly on top of the points table.

Gauteng looked set for a home win at the Wanderers, when neighbours Easterns required 16 runs off the final over. But Pierre de Bruyn snatched the game away from them, smashing the inexperienced Daren Powell for two sixes and scampering through for the winning run off the last ball of the match. Gauteng had earlier reached 230, mainly thanks to their openers Adam Bacher and Stephen Cook, but Andre Nel kept it quiet after that, claiming three wickets. Easterns slumped to 7 for 3, but Daryll Cullinan and Zander de Bruyn put on 111 for the fourth wicket, then the two de Bruyns - who shared the Man of the Match award - added another 80 for the fifth wicket. Derek Crookes, the Gauteng offspinner who opened the bowling, took four wickets, while there were three more scalps for the in-form Garnett Kruger.

Western Province 243 for 3 (Johnson 81, Kallis 109) beat Griqualand West 233 for 6 (Hector 62, Gidley 58) by 10 runs

In Kimberley a 90-run partnership between Benjamin Hector and Martin Gidley nearly allowed Griqualand West to upset the tournament favourites, Western Province. Chasing 244, the Griquas ended 10 runs short, after needing 17 from Jacques Kallis's final over of the match. But the experience of Kallis - who took a wicket as well - guided WP safely home. Earlier WP's strong batting line-up did well, with Kallis and Neil Johnson putting on 152 for the third wicket. Kallis, in superb form, stormed to his hundred off 103 balls ,while Johnson waded in with 81.
