ENGLAND v. AUSTRALIA

At Lord's, August 26

15-Apr-1973
At Lord's, August 26. Australia won by five wickets. Lord's again proved a lucky ground for Ian Chappell's side, who followed three earlier tour victories by a win as convincing as England's had been at Manchester. They played much tighter cricket and after Chappell won the toss Lillee, at full pace, gave them a swift advantage by removing Boycott's middle stump with 11 runs scored.
This brought in Close, who rolled back the years with a splendid innings of 43 in 12 overs, his crisp hitting included one 6 and seven 4's and delighted the crowd. He looked a matchwinner until he was run out after a misunderstanding with Amiss.
England were then checked by Mallett's steady off-spin bowling and fell away to 121 for six from 35 overs before they were revived by Knott and Greig who added 77 in 12 overs. The Kent wicket-keeper was at his chirpy best, needing only 47 balls for 50, including six fours.
Australia made a whirlwind start as Arnold and Snow failed to control movement or direction of the new ball. There were many wides and with Stackpole punishing most balls he could reach the score was 44 in the fifth over before Edwards was caught.
Stackpole and Ian Chappell took the score to 112 and when they left the match was settled by Greg Chappell and Sheahan who together made 103 in 22 overs. No combination of England bowlers succeeded in checking the fourth-wicket pair, who batted with delightful ease. Greg Chappell's 48 was the third highest score of the Australian innings but as he had also bowled a full complement of overs because Watson had a strained knee he was named Man of the Match. Attendance 22,000, receipts £23,195.
