Morgan's return to form, on his home ground, gave England an impetus at the end of their innings that Australia only briefly threatened to match. His unbeaten 89 from 63 balls included 34 from the last 11; three of his four sixes came from consecutive deliveries, the pick of them a crouched heave that spectacularly deposited a near-yorker from Lee over wide long-on. Until that flurry, England were heading for around 250, a good effort following a treacherous morning for batting, but slightly below par nonetheless. Rain had stopped play three times in the first six overs, but Cook and Bell did more than ride their luck, and Trott continued smartly in mid-innings. Morgan waited until the 38th over to accelerate, driving Cummins over long-off, and Kieswetter helped him add 83 from 59 balls. Australia then gave themselves a base, only for Anderson, despite a groin strain, to remove Bailey and the more forceful Warner in successive overs. Clarke, neat and busy, rebuilt until a misunderstanding left Wade stranded mid-pitch, then fell in the next over as Bresnan found some reverse swing. Late hitting by Lee merely camouflaged the ease of England's success.
