After losing the Test series, England reverted to their tried and trusted one-day side, and the policy could hardly have been more successful. Gooch's batsmen produced the highest ever total in limited-overs internationals before his bowlers snuffed out any lingering hopes Pakistan had of keeping the Texaco Trophy series alive. When West Indies amassed 360 for four against Sri Lanka, in a World Cup match at Karachi in 1987, only 50 overs were available. But while England had 55, the quality of the opposition's attack made their performance even more remarkable, though the absence of a fifth specialist bowler did give England a chance- three makeweights bowled 11 overs for 106. Invited to bat, Gooch and Stewart laid the foundations with an opening stand of 84, but it was Smith and Fairbrother who set up a total of skyscraper proportions by adding 129 in 18 overs. Hick topped it off with a 34-ball fifty. In all, his 63 required just 42 deliveries, and he hit two of England's seven sixes and seven of their 28 fours. With Javed Miandad missing because of an upset stomach, Pakistan's task looked hopeless. So it proved as Defreitas and Lewis made early inroads, to leave the understandably shocked tourists down and out at 27 for three. When last man Aquib Javed fell in the 47th over, Pakistan's only consolation was that they had avoided the heaviest defeat by runs in a one-day international.
