At Cardiff, August 30 (day/night). No result. Toss: Pakistan. One-day international debut: S. C. J. Broad.
Rain had the final say in England's first official one-day international in the Welsh capital (they had played New Zealand at Swansea in 1973). Chasing a revised target of 159 in 32 overs, Pakistan were well ahead of the rate when fresh drizzle ended their pursuit after seven. There was still time for Broad to take a wicket, but Gough, a fine servant to England in this format, went for seven an over, doing little to enhance his World Cup prospects. Mohammad Asif made early inroads again and snared Pietersen, for the third time in four innings, after striking him on the helmet. Only Bell passed 27, going on to 88, his highest one-day score for England. Although he rebuilt the innings, adding 68 with Dalrymple (who was fast becoming used to rescue missions), four runs an over was hardly intimidating.
