England v Sri Lanka, 2006

England v Sri Lanka, 2006

15-Apr-2007
At Southampton, June 15 (day/night). Sri Lanka won by two runs. Toss: Sri Lanka. Twenty20 international debuts: T. T. Bresnan, J. W. M. Dalrymple, E. C. Joyce, S. I. Mahmood, L. E. Plunkett; Sri Lanka (all).
Fernando kept his nerve in the final over, conceding just six runs to deprive the crowd of a double England victory; earlier, giant TV screens had shown the football team beating Trinidad & Tobago (narrowly) in the World Cup. Sri Lanka had threatened a daunting total. In the first over, England debutant Tim Bresnan bowled three wides; in the second, Joyce turned his ankle attempting to catch Jayasuriya on the third-man boundary. Play halted for 12 minutes as an ambulance drove on to the outfield to remove him; fortunately, an X-ray revealed no break. Then Jayasuriya and Tharanga thrashed the chastened bowlers for 75 in eight overs before Collingwood took four for 22, the best return in the seven-match history of Twenty20 internationals, restricting Sri Lanka to 163. Trescothick and new captain Strauss shared a healthy opening stand and, despite a mid-innings wobble, Trescothick looked likely to clinch victory after striking Malinga for three fours in the 18th over. Then Sangakkara ran him out, hesitating over a single, and Bresnan and Jones found 12 from eight balls beyond them.
Man of the Match: S. T. Jayasuriya.
