England v Sri Lanka, 2006

At Lord's, June 17. Sri Lanka won by 20 runs. Toss: England. One-day international debut: T. T. Bresnan.
Less than a year after their morale-boosting tie with world champions Australia on the same ground, all of England's familiar one-day failings were evident. Although they were missing the injured Vaughan, Flintoff, Giles and Simon Jones, that was no excuse for giving away 42 extras - the most by England in any one-day international. Their 23 wides contrasted with Sri Lanka's three, the difference exactly matching the margin of their defeat, and only Collingwood conceded less than four an over. Tharanga hit 120 in 156 balls, adjusting his tempo as wickets fell, and nearly achieved the rare feat of batting through the innings, though the off-spinner Dalrymple could have had him stumped on 59. Four of England's top five fell even before Muralitharan came on, Pietersen to a brilliant catch by Jayawardene at midwicket. Malinga and Fernando took three each. Trescothick reached 67, and Dalrymple equalled him in an intelligent innings, but no England batsman could produce the big score required.
Man of the Match: W. U. Tharanga.
