England v Sri Lanka, 2006

England v Sri Lanka, 2006

At The Oval, June 20. Sri Lanka won by 46 runs. Toss: Sri Lanka.
Not for the first time, Jayasuriya savaged an England attack by scoring a brutally compelling hundred, and he followed up by taking three wickets with his under-praised left-arm spin. His stand of 160 with Jayawardene, bludgeon and rapier in harmonious alliance until a run-out of their own making, formed the basis of what was - briefly - Sri Lanka's highest one-day total against England. On the ground where he scored a Test double-hundred in 1998, Jayasuriya disdainfully flicked Mahmood for two sixes. In seven overs, Mahmood conceded 80 runs, only three short of the then most expensive ten-over spell by a one-day England bowler. Harmison led the attack well, and the fielding improved, though the wide-count still reached 21. England's hopes rested on Pietersen, who once more injured his knee while batting; when Jayasuriya bowled him, the game was up, despite the best efforts of Collingwood and Dalrymple. Three run-outs, including a superb long-range direct hit from Dilshan to remove Plunkett, ended the match.
Man of the Match: S. T. Jayasuriya.
