ENGLAND v WEST INDIES 1980

At Lord"s, May 30

15-Apr-1981
At Lord"s, May 30. England won by three wickets. Another full house (paying attendance 24,000 with receipts of £94,604) watched a thrilling day"s play, played mostly in sunshine, which ended with Botham hitting the winning boundary with three balls left. As at Leeds, two days earlier, Botham won the toss and chose to field, and until he himself bowled some expensive overs late in the West Indian innings England did a good containing job. Marks, a former Oxford captain, had a useful match, bowling eleven economical overs of off-breaks and helping Botham to add 34 at an important stage of England"s innings. Chasing 236 England were given a splendid start by Boycott and Willey with an opening partnership of 135 in 33 overs. When a collapse followed, with four wickets falling cheaply, it seemed that England would lose; but Botham hit about him to great effect and, amidst much excitement, England just got home. Boycott was Man of the Match. The Prudential Trophy was won by West Indies for having the higher scoring-rate in the two matches.
