At Lord's, May 23, 24. England won by seven wickets. Toss: England. West Indies finished a day of stoppages for rain and bad light 125 for six after 50 overs. Dujon 15 and Marshall 0 being not out. Next morning, however, these two attacked the bowling with such panache that England were set a target which the conditions made sufficiently challenging. Small, so accurate throughout the series, was hit for 17 in one over. The pressure on the West Indian batsmen was reflected by their three self-inflicted run-outs. Defreitas had an especially fine match: his first five overs were maidens, he took a low catch on the square-leg boundary to dismiss Greenidge (94 balls) and he ran out Hooper from long-leg. England could afford not to take risks and batted sensibly against a much improved attack, spearheaded by Marshall. Only when victory was in sight did Gatting (58 balls) and Lamb step up the tempo. Walsh's first six overs cost only 1 run, and his final figures were the most economical in a one-day international between Test-match countries. But the West Indians were profligate with wides and no-balls, bowling 21 in all and twice seeing Gooch "dismissed" by a no-ball.
