Adrian Murrell, the noted cricket photographer, was at the ground when the aluminium bat furore unfolded

30-Jan-2009

Adrian Murrell: This incident is from the first Ashes Test of 1979-80, in Perth. In all my years of photographing Mike Brearley, I have never seen him lose it as he did on that day when he saw that Dennis Lillee was using an aluminium bat. Brearley was absolutely furious and play was held up for 10 minutes before Lillee was persuaded to change the bat for a wooden one. Brearley felt that Lillee's publicity stunt was not in the spirit of the game. Maybe it fired Lillee up because he went on to take four wickets in the next innings, and England ultimately lost the Test despite Geoff Boycott's fine 99 not out. Photograph by Getty Images
