HOLLAND v UNITED ARAB EMIRATES

At Lahore, March 1

15-Apr-1997
At Lahore, March 1. United Arab Emirates won by seven wickets. Toss: United Arab Emirates. International debuts: R. F. van Oosterom; Saeed-al-Saffar.
On form, Holland were strong favourites in the tournament's only meeting between ICC Associate Members. Instead, the United Arab Emirates finally played like ICC Trophy champions, with tight bowling and exhilarating batting. Just as in their previous encounter, the Trophy semi-final two years before, Zarawani put Holland in. The batsmen struggled as the ball moved around and only Aponso looked comfortable; Cantrell batted 41 overs for 47 before becoming one of six men out in the final ten overs, trying to force the pace. Off-spinner Dukanwala took five for 29, including four in his last 11 balls, while bespectacled seamer Shahzad Altaf conceded just 15 in ten overs. Chasing 217, the Emirates scored a stunning 94 in the opening 15 overs, thanks to Saleem Raza, a native of Lahore. There were six sixes - equalling the World Cup record - and seven fours in his 84 from 68 balls before he was caught, inevitably, on the boundary. His team-mates stuck at it and Mohammad Ishaq hit successive fours to win in the 45th over.
Men of the Match: S. Dukanwala and Saleem Raza.
