England at last were at full strength, allowing for the departure of Barrington and Stewart, and they gained a lead of 107.

Up to a point they challenged hard for a win, particularly while Bolus and Edrich were sharing a brisk opening stand of 101. Titmus had given them a good opening by taking the first three wickets for 42 on the deadest and easiest batting pitch so far encountered.

Mortimore also bowled artfully, and despite 105 in his first Test by Hanumant Singh off 64 overs, the finest innings of the series, India were out for a modest total.

England aimed to be 100 ahead by the end of the third day, but Cowdrey, playing his second successive Test century, batted six and a quarter hours, and India's second innings did not start until the fourth afternoon.

Jaisimha then hit 32 off the first five overs and Kunderam played so surely that at the close India were 166 for two. The last day held no possible interest. It dragged wearily. Kunderam scored his second century of the series, batting 89 overs, while the bowling was serious.

Subsequently, in exhibition circumstances, Pataudi, who was twice missed in the nineties and again soon afterwards, eclipsed Kunderam's Indian record score against England. He batted 97 overs for his first 100 and 40 against bowling far from serious for his last 103.
