INDIA v ENGLAND 1992-93

At Bangalore, February 26

15-Apr-1994
At Bangalore, February 26. England won by 48 runs. Toss: India.
An unremarkable match provided England with their first success for five and a half weeks in front of a passionate crowd of more than 50,000. In an experiment with the batting order, England sent Gooch in at No. 6. From there, with the help of Hick, he rebuilt the innings after the fast-medium Srinath had removed Smith, Stewart and Gatting in a lively first spell. Srinath, a former pupil of Dennis Lillee who had missed the Test series, finished with five for 41. Another neglected bowler, Jarvis, who had been omitted at Bombay for Defreitas, made his point by removing Kambli with his first ball and - after Lewis had dismissed Tendulkar in the next over - Azharuddin with his eighth. His five for 35 represented a match-winning performance. Kapil Dev and Kumble offered late but ineffectual resistance. Both teams were fined by referee Cammie Smith for their slow over-rate: India 15 per cent of their match fees, England 30 per cent.
Men of the Match: P. W. Jarvis and J. Srinath.
